For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 166 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 166 | Thank you for the info. The color chips give me an idea what the colors look like. All I had been able to find is paint color names and code numbers. I'm still prepping my truck body for paint and deciding on the color. By the way, your 37 looks to be in much better shape than mine when I bought it in 2001.

Especially since they are showing the actual paint chip charts. Some colors you still have to search for. Some of the 50's colors can be found on a Fender Guitar restore site. If anything it is an interesting read. I never knew that there were paint charts for Fender guitars. But apparently they were influenced by car colors of the time. If anyone is interested this is the site. http://www.provide.net/~cfh/fenderc.html | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | Are the 1947-2nd through 1956 colors for Chevrolet Trucks available at the above website? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 117 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 117 | Very cool! They only have one chart for 47 truck then it jumps past 56. Maybe they will have it in the future. They state they are always adding more. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 284 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 284 | Welcome and thanks for the link. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 163 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 163 | I'm just about ready to have paint on my truck. Question: Which is best, basecoat/clearcoat, acrylic enamel, acrylic urethane. I've heard that a basecoat/clearcoat looks deeper and is easier to repair if needed. Any comments on this. Thanks. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 | JonD, that is like asking which beer is best-everyone will have an opinion. My 2cents-I feel acrylic enamel w/hardener is best for a novice to use. I also feel it looks most like the OE paint jobs on old trucks. A urethane system using base/clear is prolly the longest lasting & toughest, but best left to a pro(w/a booth etc),Brian | | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 163 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 163 | Brian, think I will go with the basecoat/clear since I am not the one spraying. Problem is Forester green costs about $185.00 a gallon here in Missouri. Any place to get this color in basecoat cheaper??? Great taste, less filling. GREAT TASTE, LESS FILLING... | | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 190 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 190 | I have been painting motorcycles on and off for years. I used an Amerflint paint once back in the early 80's on my bike. I used a little less hardener than they specified because of cracking problems they were having. The paint came out perfect. The only problem (?) was that years later when I decided to change colors I took the frame, tanks and fenders to the sand blasters to be cleaned. When I came to pick it up the paint was barely dulled! The blasted was puzzled over what kind of paint I had used and it ended up costing me three times as much to have him blast the paint off! They did not sell that paint local anymore and I have been disappointed in a good, non scratchable paint ever since. I don't think I ever needed to do anything but wash it to make it shine like all get up, and it did not have a clear coat on it. I have seen in on line but it is not cheap but I have never seen a paint that has the durability and shine this paint has. | | |
