casting numbers can be hard to read. if your 3994258 is really 8994256... that comes back as a 64-77 Chevy 292...

ok so i checked again and it is clearly a 3 not an 8?? so its 3994258. on the block there is also c 1 2.. so the question is ... was it March 1 1972 or March 1 1962... how do I find out and where there any differences between the two?? i am truly unsure and cant find this cast number anywhere... also it looks to have been rebuilt fairly recently and a new cam installed. I am really starting to wonder if I will need to do to much to it. Interested to open it up and see now.

ok soo i found something... at first i dropped the 292 when using google and I kept seeing responses with 250's... which I know this is not.... but I saw this portion of a post.

"Leo Santucci says the numbers stamped into the distr pad indicate where the block was cast and its "dress" (Compr ratio and acc).
On page 17(Chev Inline 6 Cyl Pwr Manl) he lists casting # 3994258 as a '63-'66 292."

So with the date code Im guessing its a 62. Case closed smile Still can't wait to open her up and see how much has been done already towards my quest for 300hp... when we saw it run in the truck it didn't have a speck of smoke and ran quite decent.. just some oil leaks. Any recommendations for rear ends and gear ratios?? Looking at pairing it to a 400 hydromatic we have. Want a nice cruiser that also will do well at highway speeds.

3.08 gear with a 28" to 30" tire would work, or even a 2.73. The 292 should have huge amounts of low rpm torque, so gear low using the 1 to 1 high gear turbo 400. I would shoot for 2400 rpm @ 70 mph, so figure accordingly. If you drive slower, rpm will be less of course. Google rpm calculators, there are tons of them to choose from.

my quest for 300hp requires an engine you wouldn't even recognize except the bottom of your wallet is missing.

Over 1 HP per cubic inch from a 292? Get ready to spend megabucks for a VERY short-life engine.

Far more expensive than simply swapping to a stock V8.
If you want to keep the L6, a turbo or adapting an Eaton M90 supercharger is far more practical, but still $$$.

1hp per c.i. is very achievable. Yes it may cost more than dropping in a crate 350 but i like the inline. I'm not in a rush as the 216 in it right now is solid so if I spend a bit more collecting parts over a year+ then oh well.

Up here at least you don't see a ton of hopped up 6's. Every show the trucks are all running an LT1 or a 350... it gets boring and bland. Therefore i chose a 292 that I was able to pickup for a good price and go that route. There is a ton of support for these engines out there and no where else have I seen them categorized as short lived at the 1hp/ci range.

Look to Australia for high performance inline sixes, they know how to get it done.

The hard part is not making the horse power, that's easy enough, it's make the horse power at the rpm in which you intend to drive most in. Most all the inlines that make lots of hp are set up for very high rpm.

Matties, you might want to check at inliners.org. They are really into the power side of things.

And I am having a diet hot fudge sundae later on tonight. (Unfortunately I won't be fully functional 20 minutes afterward. Ice cream does not reciprocate with the love which I have for it.)
500+ HP, pump gas, driveable? OK...

Mick a few months back you mentioned you were looking for mounts to install the 292 in your 3100. Any luck on that. Ive run into posts over a year or two ago that said there are prefab kits you can buy, but no idea where they were from or if they are still made. Any luck on this?

I don't know the potential of a blown 292, but I have a blown 183" L6, runs on 93 octane with stock converter, idles at 500 RPM, 520 HP at 15 lbs. boost on the dyno.
Wait - it's a Supra 2JZ-GTE, does that matter?

I did. I think it was Tom Langdon? that used to make them. Someone here can correct me on that. I called him and he gave me some part numbers for piecing them together and altering them. I called them, no sure who, and they made me a special set complete. The left side mount is welded to a 1/4" plate to bring it even with the right side and channel mount to weld to the frame. Biscuit rubber mounts. Very nice and no more money than their other mounts. I live in Indiana but I'm stuck in PA building a dry ice plant for a couple of more months. I will be home for the weekend in a week or two and can send you the info. If I forget please remind me.

That would be great. So do I dare ask what the going rate for a 500hp pump gas engine would be? I've seen some of the engines they build go for 30k plus. Just a ball park to quench my curious mind. lol

What Tranny/axle is it that you are mounting it up to? I was leaning to the TH400 as I have 2 of them sitting here that were properly rebuilt but still looking for axles... I heard a 70ish camaro axle fits well, but also have heard that the 4wd s10 axles fit well too... An interesting one (but I'm not sure model or what year it went into) was a 70's gm truck that is close to a perfect match. Read it somewhere a while ago and cant remember where.

You won't know what transmission to use until you have your axle ratio - cheaper to choose OD Y/N than installing new R&P.
Your stall speed will depend on your cam.
If you have the room, an Atlas 4200 is a much better (but $$) choice.
You can buy an entire Toyota L6 twin turbo engine & automatic transmission, used, for about $3,000 but you'll need aftermarket electronics to control it.
There is no "going rate", a 12 port head alone is over $3,000 without porting, springs or rocker arms.

Are you committed to NA or blown?
NA for the same 500 hp is going to be both much more expensive, worse manners, higher stall converter, shorter life expectancy, shorter service life, more likely to break something, more sensitive to being in tune.

I'm sticking NA for now, but not looking for 500hp. 300hp would make me happy happy happy.

You will be using all the wrong parts by building "for now".
A blown motor is not a NA motor with a blower, unless you don't care how it works.

Mattie - as you mention, 300 HP is doable; BUT will it give you what you want "Want a nice cruiser that also will do well at highway speeds"???

What is doable for racing purposes, and how it will "cruise" on the street are two entirely different animals!

Forget the cost for the time being. 1 + HP / CI out of a NA 292 is going to result in an engine that deplores an automatic transmission, and will be a handful to drive around town even with a manual transmission. Now if you are building a "race" engine, where you come off the line at 4000 RPM, you don't have to worry about around town driveability. Personally, I would shoot for MAYBE 240 HP, which should "Want a nice cruiser that also will do well at highway speeds".

But if you are convinced it will work, go for it!

Jon.

Just a thought: there is a blown variant that has not been used to my knowledge, and which has several advantages:
1. you can make the mounts with a band saw
2. you only need to buy the "head unit", which is not engine-specific
3. any good exhaust system will work
4. the stock rocker arms, cam, head works OK
5. strongly recommended: forged piston, better rods
What is it?
ATI Pro-Charger, which attaches in the same line as your accessories (alternator, power steering) belt-driven, discharges right through a common Clifford, Offy, etc. intake manifold - you only need a small adapter.

The feedback is appreciated all! My overall goal in mind is to have a fun truck that i can drive around BC in... mostly up the street to work but occasionally 150 to 200 miles to shows and meets. I have not driven a 292 so The experience of those who have is valuable to me. Panic That procharger is a cool idea. I have not looked at anything even remotely like that sbut it would be quit a project when completed.

I know nothing about building motors... I had a great shop rebuild my 292 stock, and with a SM420 tranny, now that it's tuned right with the rebuilt single barrel Rochester B carb it'll lurch the 3-ton chassis pretty good if I'm not gentle with the clutch off the block in 2nd.
Guess I'm saying with the amount of torque this sucker produces, unless you plan on racing or dragging this vehicle a near stock build with good gears for what you want behind it would work fine.

You can fit an Eaton cheaper, but the manifold is very complex and heavy, difficult to fabricate, and needs an adapter to use any carburetor. A PC can just blow through a properly prepared 4 bbl.
