I'm looking for help from those with experience with pulling the engine /trans in one piece. Truck is a '57 LCF, original 283 and 4 speed. Do I have to remove the top cover from the trans for clearance. I removed the shift lever and parking brake lever but I'm wondering if I can get enough angle to clear the floor support. With the doghouse out of the way there is lots of room directly above the trans but as the engine will have to angle up I can't tell if it will clear.

I don't know about LCF "floor support" but just try to wind it out...tilt and up and tilt and up and forward and tilt and up and..... If it won't go, let her back down. Tranny is four bolts and 130 lbs. Make sure clutch fork is all loose. Better with all front parts off, radiator, support and whatever an LCF has. Don't want to try and hop over tall stuff. If you are doing some kind of major swap, you would want the front clip off anyway to fab and mock up.

Buy this. https://www.amazon.com/Oberg-Tilt-Lift-Engine-Sling/dp/B002LXQUPS

Be done with it.

You can stand an engine up vertical in either direction and any place in between. I have had mine for 15 years and would not pull an engine without it. I pulled the engine and trans out of my 46 2-ton with this and only removed the hood and shifter.

Should come right out with the front clip off. The front clip is held on via 8 bolts (top of the fender, bottom of the fender, lower inner fender at the fire wall and core support at the radiator).

Thank you gentlemen for info, after more study under the truck I determined it won't come out in one piece, so tranny is getting dropped first.

I drop my tranny using a floor jack under it. I leave the shifter on it and have someone in the cab holding it up so it stays on the floor jack. Then, as I lower it, I slide it over to the side of the truck and have them lower the shifter. I works pretty well both coming out and going back in.

Thanks cuda, looks like I'll end up bolting the trans back on and then take bell housing/trans off together, the throw out bearing is seized on the trans snout. Dang rodents do more damage than the other elements. I think I could get the cutting torch at the bearing but with the mouse nest and other flamables I'll wait till it's out of the truck.

should be able to drop it with the bellhousing the same way. Good luck! Yes, rodents can ruin a lot of stuff!

I'm happy to report the trans/clutch/bellhousing is out, everything being cast iron along with the parking brake drum made for an interesting controlled decent but no damage to humane or machine. I estimate this combo is 250 lbs.
