My grandfather had a 56-57 GMC and the tire was on the front of the left fender. I have a 65 stepside and I do not see where it would fit in this area.

I offered to start making something and selling it if Chevy Classic would just send me a picture of where and how it was mounted.

Hey guys, I have no clue as to where the spare tire should be mounted on a 65 stepside. Did they just throw it in the back of the bed?

If you have pictures of a brace and how it was mounted please send it over. I might make a few and spread them around.

Howdy sir.. The side tire mount was connected to the top of the bed with 2 feet and had 2 other little feet connect to the fender. I think. The fender was cut out in that top left rounded part to make a place for the tire. From what I can remember that is what it looked like. I have not seen one up close in 25 years. I think it was made of 1/4 round rod one end flattened and had hole in it where the bolt held it to the bed and fender.
Here is a pic of one, I am not sure if you can see the makeup of the mount well enough to tell. I would bet any of the old Chevy trucks with the step side bed and the spare tire mount on the side of the bed would be pretty much the same.

The other place to keep the spare is under the back of the truck, just like most all pickups are today.

I dont have the notch in the fender. This is not original fenders I can tell. They are too thin which gives me another concern with the tire flopping around on a bumpy road. I dont want it under the truck. New trucks like my Tundra have them there but they also have a nice easy way to lower the tire. I dont want to get caught laying on my back on some rainy day wrestling with a few old rusty bolts under the truck. I am going to whip up something. I knew I needed the notch in the fender and all replacement fenders I see do not have the notch. I may mount it on the wall of the bed inside just behind the cab.

Hey guys thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth on the subject... hopefully it will help. I dug around in my 60-66 factory instruction manual as well as my LMC catalog... both resources show where you could mount to the side of the bed OR under the bed between the frame... LMC also offers an in bed mounting kit however this is specifically labeled as after market kit... the only problem i have with trying to understand LMC is that they do not disignate between which location is for stepside and which is for fleetside. I DO know that on my longbed stepside there is not a notch in the stepside fender for the tire because there is adequate space to mount the tire without it... however on short bed stepsides there has to be the notch or else the tire will not fit... unless of course you mount it under the frame.

If you do end up puting it under the bed, you can adapt the winch style carrier from a late model Chevy to fit. I fabbed a cross member to mount one on the '55, then added a McGuard tire lock for security.
