So I just bought a 1950 Chevy 3800 ... love the 9' bed! It came with a spare tire/rim, and the guy I bought it from just had it laying in the bed.

Anybody know how that spare tire was originally mounted from the factory? I'm assuming it was mounted in the bed (plenty of room back there) or maybe it was mounted on the side, but either way I can't seem to locate any old pics that show it. I'd love to locate some original (or at least aftermarket) hardware to have it installed how it was meant to be.

Also love to get a hubcap for it too ... :D

Any ideas?

deathvalleydog,

I also have a 1950 Chevy 3800, the 9' beds are great. On mine, the spare tire is mounted below the bed in the back. It has two straps that are channel shaped (in cross section) These hang from four 1/2" diameter eyebolts that are fastened to the frame members. The Factory Assembly Manual shows what I'm trying to describe but on the 1.5 ton trucks. But every 1 ton I have ever seen has the same setup as I described for my truck. I think around 52 or 53 they offered a side mount spare for these 9' beds. I do have the correct parts for mine (currently off of the truck). It's a little difficult changing tires on these 1 tons just due to the weight of them.
Good luck with your truck!

On my 1 ton there is a mount on the passenger box side.
Good luck finding original hub caps. I have 2 spares both pretty beat up 1 painted and 1 chrome.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone! (yeah ... actually got moved to the one-ton forum ;)

I think if I can get a hub-cap I might mount it in the outside of the bed ... it would look nice there. Otherwise, maybe underneath where it was OEM. If I can figure out the photo thing I'll post some pics :)

1949 .. Did it appear that is was an OEM mount? Or did it look aftermarket? Or could you even tell? wink

Probably aftermarket but it certainly looks like it was a common way of dealing with the spare tire. It's my personal preference versus under the bed.

I don't suppose you have a photo of that mount, do you? I've been looking on-line and I see a lot of different things purported to be "mounts", but nothing specific as to how it actually all fits together mechanically.

I don't think 19.5's were available on the AD trucks. My 3800 came with 8 lug 700-18's and I am changing to 8R-19.5's (changing axles too) as that is pretty close to the same size and more availability.
