I put a donor dash in my 48 panel. But I don't know what year it was 47-53. Now I need a glove box and they are different from 49 to 50. Can anyone tell me the difference. thanks

Do you need the liner (cardboard) or the door?

The liner I think that is the only thing different. In the catalog they go 47-49 or 50-53.

The early glovebox attaches in a different manner. The 1947-48 (a few early 49's) have this metal band around the attachment points.

Beg to differ! My 1949 3100 is a late '49 and had the metal band around the glove box along with the rubber windlace that slides into the channel around the doors.

The assembly is different also. On the earlier style (like the late 49 COE) You push the liner in through the opening and stop when it passes the hinge. Then put the metal band in. The screws go through the the band and cardboard (holes should line up) and screw into the flange of the dash.
On the newer (51 COE) You push the liner all the way through (or bring it up from the back)and then fit it outside the flanges. The washer head screws drop through the holes in metal and through the holes in the cardboard and into individual sheetmetal nuts.

Do they take the same number of screws.

NO. The metal band is countersunk for flat head screws.
The later one uses washer head or truss head.

Would you know how many screws goes in each one. My dash was strip when I got it.

Count the holes in the mounting flanges on the dash.

Wrote my late '49 off as a typical GM anomaly. Use what was left over on the assembly line and then move on to the new parts for the next year. All in the spirit of saving money? Early...late....don't think it really made that much of a difference. The assembly line used what they had in the bins and get them down the line. Just makes it tough when you are trying to restore a truck to the correct year. Cover one eye and try again.

Maybe a quick way to which dash you have is to look at the flanges where the screws hold the cardboard insert in.
Early holes are small and should show some signs of a sheetmetal screw being in them. The later ones have clearance holes because the screws drop through. Maybe even a mark from the screw heads.

Thanks that is a great idea on the size of holes. I sand blasted and installed it and then painted it because I thought all the 47-53 dashes was the same. WRONG Thanks for the help.
Steve Just went and looked holes are big and clean no thread marks or pulled metal from screws so I will order one for 50-53. Thanks again everyone.

Oh oh! By reading this thread, I learned that I'm missing still another part---thr glove box ring on my '47 3100.
I hope it isn't as scarce as the under bed spare tire carrier-----they want my fist born male child for that one!

In a word no, if someone has one here Swap Meet is your best bet, I have rarely seen one on eBay because I don't think people pull them as a rule on part outs, if you didn't know it was there you would miss it.
