| | | | Joined: Sep 2016 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2016 Posts: 18 | I recently had the yoke on back of trans. replaced along with U-Joints, and Okie bearing, Now my 1953 Chevy is making a loud screeching noise that varies with the engine RPM. I have dressed the belts, that wasn't the prob. It seems to be coming from distributor, I lubed it and the screech is still there. At idle I can change the pitch of the screech by touching the distributor. HELP!

It sounds like you've got a galled mainshaft and/or top bushing.

It takers a full disassembly of the distributor to inspect it, and the top of the shaft that contacts the bushing. A galled shaft requires replacing the distributor because there's no practical way to build up the shaft and get it smooth again.

When I was running a shop I'd fire a mechanic who asked for help inspecting a distributor shaft, but that was 40-something years ago.

| | | | | Joined: Sep 2016 Posts: 18 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2016 Posts: 18 | Well I removed the oiler and sprayed the distributor shaft with WD penetrating oil the Distrib runs smooth as silk, it would seem the screech is coming more from the flywheel area. The screech isn't constant more like the flywheel rubbing on something and causing noise the screech speeds up and slows down with the revs of the engine.
