The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Panels 'N Burbs Suburban Mounting Blocks???

Am in a dilemma with 1953 Suburban body mounting blocks. Am 99% sure the Suburban is 100% orig.** When I removed the body for body and paint work all four mounting blocks measured 1&5/8" in height but the kit I have from Jim Carter all four blocks are 2&1/4" in height?? Should I mfg. blocks like the orig. one's or go with Jim Carters kit?? All thoughts appreciated.

I have one somewhere in my garage - but, I have no idea where it is (I am still unpacking/shuffling things from my my move from NY to NC). I'll go on a garage search/safari today.

Most likely, the same mounts were used on 3100 panel trucks?

Just going by memory, I think I had the smaller size on my 1953 3100 panel.

Your suburban may be different than my 52 3100 panel?

Achipmunk, ** If did not know better I would say the orig. body mounting blocks in your series of pictures were the one's I removed from my 53 Suburban nails and all. By chance do you recall what the height of the blocks were? Mine measured 1-5/8 inch's but the kit I got from Jim Carter the blocks measure 2-1/4 inch's. Thanks for the pictures. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

When I pulled my burb body off of my chassis the original blocks stayed in place but looked rough. I ordered the "body mount" kit from Carter's that came with all new bolts, blocks, and rubber pads.

When it came time to put the body back on the chassis I noticed the new blocks were way too tall and narrow. I almost think they were pick up bed blocks. I re-used my old ones and used the new bolts and pads that came from Carter's kit.

Marzach, I am almost sure I have an original in a box out in the shop. I will look tomorrow and get a measurement.

TrknGMC, I agree with you on the blocks. Back when I did my 37 my memory seems to say the bed blocks for it were 2 1/4" and came from Carters.
....as I tell my wife, "nothing surprises me these days".

I went through the same situation about a year ago with jims kit. I'm quite surprised the wrong kit is still being produced. I ended up making my own body blocks out of white oak.

Thanks to all for the information. I fully expected to get the answer that you guy's provided. The series of pictures were great.I just could not imagine the 2-1/4 inch blocks from Jim Carter could be correct with the orig. one's being only 1-5/8 inch's. I will do as "bowtietrim" did and make the blocks out of oak.** Thanks again guy's.

Marzach, as promised I measured my old on tonight and it measures
1 5/8" x 3" x 2 3/8"

The rubber pad attached to it is 3/16" thick but does not cover the entire block of wood. Over the years they probably flattened out a little.
For my "cushions" I cut up an old fire hose that I accumulated as it has a "polyester" cover with rubber inside. I figured they would never rot and hold up nicely.

Achipmunk & jorb,& Others ** Thanks for the information & pictures. Looks like I'll be making new mounting blocks. Seems like as long as Jim Carter has been in the business something as simple as the body mounting blocks would be correct in his kit. Thanks Again To All.

I tried to call Carter's twice that week I realized the blocks in is his kit were incorrect and got put on hold twice and I gave up. I too am surprised a company of his caliber doesn't sell the correct stuff from time to time. The bolts and rubber pads were spot on though.
