Has anyone ever done this successfully?
It seems that leaving the rivets could help promote rust, and based on what I have been going through with rust removal I don't want to create more problems down the road. Would welds hold up in this application? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2000 Posts: 804 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2000 Posts: 804 | Don't weld them. Welding it is not the way to go at all. You WILL see it down the road. If you were to do something like that, extend the inner lip up and bolt it to that like most other cars and trucks used.
I personally used bolts with rivit heads (you can make them, I got mine from an old Gym locker) and it works like a charm. Mine have not shown one speck of rust, and it was twenty five years ago I replace the rivits.

Painter said something about removing the rear fender braces. Said it would be easier for him to rub out etc., without those rivits. Told him I would think about it. Any suggestions? | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 17 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: May 2006 Posts: 17 | I left the rear fender braces on my 52 chevy truck and it is getting painted right now and the painter has had no problems with the braces if that helps you any.
