My 1951 chevy 3100 with a 216 has what looks like a distributor from aboutb 1964 vintage. Is it going to be ok to use, or should I look for something more o.e.m. Who knows how long it's been in there. Thanks guys.

Wait to hear from someone else (like Pre '68 Dave), but I think you are OK.

The opposite might be a problem - using a 216 distributor with a later than around 1953/54 235/261 crankshaft

Should be no problem. But most distributor newer than 1962 would need modifying to fit.

Only issue is compatible drive gears, if you have cast iron cam and a distributor with a steel gear, will not last long. Read info re this on Langdonsstovebolt.com
Best of luck

1962 is the last year that the distributor is a drop in. The 194/230/250/292 distributors starting in 1963 do not engage the oil pump drive tang deep enough. The lock down flange can be turned off and an item specific hold down from Speedway costs about 20 bucks. The vacuum advance on the 1964 is internal while the 1962 and older moved the whole distributor. Most people that go to the later distributor just move on to the HEI since the exact amount of work is required.
