On flat roads it does fine. Any thoughts on what the problem is? While retoring the truck I bought and had a shop rebuild the tranny. I only have 2000 miles on the truck since the resto.

Don't bother going back to the first guy- - - -he's already proved what he can and can't do.

Linkage,internal bearing wear, or a worn main shaft will cause the tranny to pop out of gear. Had an early Muncie 3 speed in my 1958 Chevrolet that would pop out of 3rd. Had a so called tranny shop rebuild it and it still did the same. Rebuilt it myself with all new bearings and main shaft, adjusted the linkage to FSM specifications and no more problems.

Popping out of 3rd gear is a common problem with these transmissions. There is a fix which places a spacer between the front bearing and the gear. You must also remove the spacer on the first row of needle bearings for this to work. This moves the gear further into the syncronizer. pre68Dave has info on this on his site also.
Popping out of 2nd and 3rd indicates to me that all of the above could be in play. In any event a replacement syncro drum and the 2-3 shift fork are in order.

My Blog | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 734 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 734 | Rebuilt mine almost 40K miles ago, it's been fabulous except the column shifter has always shaked/bounced a lot in 2nd. Just keep a hand on it to steady it, and it's never acted like it wanted to pop out of gear. Probably could stand linkage adjustment?? but never stay in 2nd long enough to take my hand off the shifter, so never considered it much of a problem.
