Is there a difference between the 235 and a283/327 bellhousing? and how would you tell? I am thinking of putting a v8 in my 59 and found a bellhouseing at one of the shops but don't know if its correct. Can I look for a casting /pn on it?

I think I can answer this one, although not in detail. Yes, there is a difference in the block to bellhousing bolt pattern between the 235 and the 283/327. The series of inline 6's after 1962 did share the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the V8's, as I understand it.

Others with more knowledge will certainly chime in. I just caught this one as I am about to announce a mea culpa.

Here is a tech tip that will explain the bellhousings

http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/engines/bellhousings.html

Just remember, use the starter that fits the bellhousing you use. If you are going to use factory engine front mounts, you'll need the crossmember V8 extension brackets and a set of V8 engine block mounts. Also, the throttle linkage is different for a V8.

A huge difference! Two completely different animals.
That swap in the '59 should be pretty easy one. Just need to find the bits and pieces from a donor truck or also aftermarket motor-trans mounts are surely out there.
Best of luck

A quick way to tell car from truck bellhousings is by the side motor mounts...cars have (2) threaded bolt holes on each side, thucks only have one large bolt hole.

If you're using the stock 3/4 speed that came in the truck, you'll need a bellhosuing with the 4 9/16 opening. A 3815891 bell has that size opening.

SCORE !! Went by the shop today and the bellhousing is a 3733365
But best was the guy says its scrap so take it home for free. Will check the dia of the opening as I would like to keep my old 4 speed. Looks like the opening is 4 5/8 hope that is gona work. Well looking at this further it is probably a car bellhousing, there are 2 bolt holes holding the motor mounts and my truck has one. maybe this was not as good of a score.

If memory serves me the car bellhousing has a smaller transmission hole than the truck one.
