Now that I've got pretty new paint, I'm looking at the way the grill mounts to the surround. Looks to me there is no way not to get rubbing and chipping there. Is there some trick to getting the fit so that doesn't happen? I've not seen any gaskets offered and really doesn't look like there is a way to do that. Anyway, if someone knows I'd appreciate a heads up.

There is no gaskets for the grille. The best thing you can do is run some masking tape along the edges to help the chip problem. it also helps to have 2 people to install it. If you get the one side in place with screws started and then you will have to carefully force the grille into position if I remember correctly because they always spring out a bit when removed.

The 40s passenger cars had what you are talking about all around front end sheet metal. Looks just like the thin roofing paper.

On my 46 I used black duct tape. You can add as many layers as you want and it stays where you want.
