Broke all the tie rod ends, drag links loose today and what a mess. At least 1/2 were deformed due I'm guessing to rarely getting any grease. The ball seats were worn to about 1/2 normal size. I don't know what was holding it together...think Rust. Tie rod was bent. Good reminder when you buy a 70 yr old truck to do a thorough check on key subsystems before getting out on the highway.

Good advice, Allen,

Check:
tires
brake system parts and adjustment (including lines)
front end parts and adjustment
wheel bearings and adjustment
adjust steering
change engine oil & filter
change gear oil in rear-end and transmission
complete tune-up with new all parts
battery cable/connections (check for correct gauge if 6v)

That would be a good start.

I have a 1951 GMC 100-22 with a stock 228 CID and three-speed. Truck in family since new. Inferited from father-in-law with the proviso that I would restore. Tie rod is bent, tie rod ends bad. Saw a replacement ad for "Modern" tie rod ends for this application but I can't figure out if they would replace the multi-piece ends or not and can't see how these "Modern" tie rod ends would bolt on original steering linkage? Anybody got any suggestions?

Others might respond regarding "modern" (sealed) tie-rod ends. Make sure you understand all that has to be replaced and matched-up, if you go "modern".

I use original-style ends/parts and have never had any problems - and, they are adjustable and greaseable.

If the GMC parts are similar to the Chevrolet truck parts (on 1/2 tons, I'd bet they are the same), repair kits and parts readily available (check the "Parts" section in "Links" (upper menu on this page). Full/expensive original-style tie-rod-end assemblies are also available for your size/rear Chevrolet truck.

Allen, was that on the 3600?

I have a couple stock style tie rods and drag links for a 3100 I'm not using.

Echo, yes it is on the 3600...I would gladly take them off your hands if they will fit. From my read of the shop and assembly manual they should fit. Want to go back with OE. Much appreciated.
