Looking to paint my 1949 cape maroon. It was not the original color, but I want to keep it close to original, so I'm going with an originally offered color. My question is does anyone have a truck that is painted in cape maroon? I've seen chips, and pictures of maroon trucks on google. But I'd like to see one that is painted "Cape Maroon" using the offset codes that are available through the stovebolt tech tips.

Or if anyone has any similar maroon colors that would be found on a later model production vehicle that would be very similar.

I did a search from the menu above for "Cape Maroon" and came up with a lot of posts about this color.

Maybe this search link will work.

Anyway ... you should follow up with some of these folks. Maybe a PM if they haven't posted in a while.

Good luck,
Peggy M

Saw an early '50 or '51 Studebaker Starlight couple this past summer, thinking it was the "Commance Red", Wife like it,was more of a brown maroon, not too much red in it like the Cape Maroon. I have a pint of the Cape Maroon from the PPG dealer, according to the formula when I called PPG. (she says it't too reddish) Have yet to actually spray it on metal

I think I may just have to pick a maroon that is going to be on a new car lot and use it. Most of the google image searches will just say maroon, so no clue if they are cape or another flavor. At least I can see it without having to drop $400 on experimenting with colors.

This is my issue, finding a maroon that is either
1) accurate to the original, or
2) the right maroon for my eye.

That picture is too red/orange. I want a deep maroon. Found a modern color that I like, its just that its a metallic. Not sure if they can just mix it without the metallic or not.

In case you are interested in seeing old paint chips of Cape Maroon, a few are linked-to near the top of the Tech Tip for Paint Codes 47-55 Advance-Design Trucks:

Acme - PROXLIN chip

Ditzler/PPG chip

At the bottom of that Tech Tip is information on how to contact PPG. You might get lucky and they might give you the name of a modern "offset" code/name/formula.

As you most likely know, old chips (and old trucks, and scanned old chips, and computer screens) would display colors that might not be true to the original non-oxidized, non-aged, paint color.

I found the color that I want. This color right here. I am working with Alexander Auto who is/was selling the particular truck to see if maybe I can get lucky and get an offset code or a modern color. To me, it is my "ideal" maroon.

I LIKE the way my truck turned out!! I bought a gallon of Van Sickle Premium (Alkyd)Implement "Farmall" Red,NOT Case I.H.C.,(which is more orange). I added a little less than 1/2-pint of Van Sickle Premium Gloss Black,to get the shade I desired. Check my truck out,and see if it's the shade you're looking for!! Total cost for the paint, primer, and reducer was about $125.00!! I'm planning on using Van Sickle clear coat,to finish it off, since I added a little too much reducer. It's a little dull, for my taste. The clear coat should help bring out the shine,as well as give a protective coating. Hope this helps!!

Yes sir. My jeep is painted maroon. paint shop used a Century Club sticker to match to. turned out too purple to me. Its ok, but it looks better w/ mud on it, which is how it stays most of the time.

But this truck won't get dirty, so it has to be right on. This is a long term project so I'll try and find something a little more modern that works. Problem w modern is they are all metallic. not sure how a paint forumlated for metallic would work if mixed for non-metallic. Gig 'em!

Dunno how long Barrett-Jackson keeps a page active, but this Cape Maroon just sold in Phoenix for $44K. Looks exactly like the truck on the cover of Tom Brownell's original edition of "How to Restore Your Chevrolet Pickup." (posted for reference, as it appears OP has long since painted his truck)

I saw that truck in person at a show in the early 1990's and the only word I can think of is WOW!

That's the color I'm in love with. OP is still working on it. A slow process. But I'll get there eventually.
