The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop 235 carburetor insulator

The insulator block broke on my 1957 235 that goes between the carb and intake. It's like a cork-feeling material. Should a regular gasket be used with this? Is there anywhere is preferred to get a replacement? I don't want to waste time and money on a cheap product.

Use an gasket on top of the insulator (a gasket not needed under the insulator if the mating surfaces are flat and smooth - not pitted).

Somehow, there must be another meaning; I cannot really associate sub-atomic particles with a stovebolt 6.

All joking aside: Vetteman, the originals were sometimes bakelite, sometimes a fiber compound, and aftermarket versions were often make by cheaply laminating (read as fastening together with long staples!) a number of asbestos flange gaskets to the required thickness. Often, enthusiasts machine them out of a block of hardwood, and just as often paint the edges black.

Sorry guys, I meant cork. I also study particle physics as a hobby and quark and cork are pronounced very similarly and I made a mistake when typing since I have recently been reading a lot about "quarks".

What I meant was it felt as though it was a "cork type" material, being that its composition was hard, but soften than metal. As carbking said, "Fiber compound" would have been a better description. I ask because I also saw the product for sale that Tim gave the link to and the description doesn't give the material form which it is made. It appears to be some type of plastic and I don't want to waste money on something that won't work correctly. We all know how many "gasket" type parts are made cheaply and ineffectively, like for example the cheap plastic intake manifold gaskets for 5.7 Chevrolet Vortecs which fail almost before you put them on. I'm aware this isn't a gasket but it does connect two flat surfaces of metal.

Cork is much too soft, and will not work.

Quark on the other hand......how many would it take, and how do you pick one up?

The spacers are probably available or see my first post for suitable materials you can use to make one.

I guess what you guys are saying is that all the products offered are relatively the same and are good for their purpose.
