Hi all,
New here. I have a 1949 Thriftmaster 1 Ton with a 9 ft bed. I am looking to find replacement 8 lug wheels. I want to keep the original look but not a split rim. I have 3 splits and one that is not. Any ideas where I can find some? Any help would be appreciated...
Thank you
H

Dexstar- Am 20766 part number. Look at etrailer.com and search this part number. It is a 16" rim but gets you very close. You will need to remove the hubcap clips from your original rims and install on the new rim. The caps fit perfectly I am told. Run this rim with a 215/85/16 tire and you should be good to go. I am currently trying to find a source for this tire here in alberta in order to help save some cash. All the reviews and questions on this site are extremely helpful.

Here's more info and a video on that 16" wheel, it does look about right.
https://www.etrailer.com/tv-Demo-Dexstar-Tires-and-Wheels-AM20766.aspx

Another option is 19.5" though those wheels are harder to find, or more expensive. Tires are pretty heavy duty, good load rating choices.
Some new options, none look right for an old truck. http://www.ricksontruckwheels.com/wheels-gm-25003500srw.php
Here are some old ones I found and will use on my 1 ton, they can be found on some bread trucks and other 1 ton stuff in the 60's and some later.

These wheels take an 8R19.5 tire which is about 32-33" tall, a good look for these trucks I think.

I use those wheels and for the front I mounted a baby moon style chrome hubcap that some of the trailer places carry. I don't use hubcaps on the rear. My Tires are Yokohama 7.5 R16LT. My truck steers and handles just fine.

Take a look at these. 07-10 E250/E350 wheels

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Refinished-Ford-E250-2007-2010-16-inch-Wheel-Rim-OEM-/381721709885?hash=item58e0630d3d:g:67MAAOSwZVlXn0wV&vxp=mtr

They don't have the nubs on the center ring. I think thay look more like the OEM wheels.

Is this what you went with ? I see the backspacing on these is 4", I need to go measure the stock wheels. Let us know how they work.

I see the wheels in Grigg's post have a 3 1/2" backspacing and others have used those as upgrades for stock 8 lug wheels, so you should be fine.

Coker 8X16 wheels

Here is a picture of my wheels. They were purchased from Redneck Trailer. They fit fine with no rubbing. Backspace is 4". Rears have a 1/4" spacer to allow baby moon. Baby moon was purchased at Redneck also. Rear wheel shot. Fender is not mounted in this picture. Have fun and good luck

Hello. Just wondering if anyone uses those Dexstar wheels on the rear of a 1-ton. If so I assume no issues with drum clearance.also will baby moons fit over the large rear hub. Thanks

I run Dexstars with no issues. Have not adapted my hubcaps yet with clips. Really like those Coker rims but the price seems really high.

I'm a bit of a n00b on here and I'm trying to understand my wheel options with a '49 3800 DRW.
I really like the Dexstars referenced earlier in the thread, but obviously that wouldn't be the optimal choice, unless they can just go on the rear as a single. I'm not even sure if I want to keep the DRW.
It looks like 19.5" bread van wheels were the hot ticket for a while, but it looks like availability isn't what it once was. Were these used because of availability and looks or was the diameter important? Is there another common size dual that would work?
I will not be hauling anything heavy, I just want more tire choices and possibly more modern construction.

In my opinion the 19.5" dual wheels were a good choice because they fit (with few exceptions) over the large rear drums, also availability isn't bad, not expensive you just have to look a little for used ones.
New ones are available as part number 29015 on page 27, this Accuride catalog http://www.accuridewheelendsolution...ev-2-Accuride-Wheels-Product-Catalog.pdf
They don't look good.. not bad, but nothing like the original 18" wheels do, looks is not a selling point for the 19.5 duals.

In general 19.5 tires single or dual are tall, the 8R19.5 tire you're likely to use is 31-32" tall. This helps with road speed which is already a challenge with low axle gears.
They're also heavy duty, they're a real truck tire with good load ratings, not passenger vehicle tires. You can't buy a light duty 19.5" tire
They last a long time, wear well.
I have switched from both 7.50-17 and 18" tires on single and dual 1 tons to 8R19.5 tires and both seemed to ride smoother, notice the pot holes less.

I have not tried modern 16" tires on either so don't really have comparison or comments on that.

19.5" single wheels are a great option, tubeless, taller than 17" originals, same style/looks of wheel, can even fit original hub caps. Only trouble is they're not made new in the original style/look that I know of, and they're hard to find. You can however buy new ones that look different.
