What was the original rim width and tire size on my 54 1/2 ton?

6.00 x 16" tires on a 4.5" rim (a rim which was used with both 6.00 and 6.50 tires)

Thanks Tim - I bet my truck will steer a lot easier if I replace the fat tires and 8 inch rims with something closer to original

If you want to go with original tire sizes your only option is someplace like Coker. Modern tires have a different sizing number system and if you search the forums someone has listed the modern tire sizes you can use. They are close, but not exact. I bought my tires online from Coker for my 54 1/2 ton using original rims.

I have LT235/85R16 radials on my original 1954 3100 wheels. One set with tubes and one set without tubes. They have a high-profile narrow-look like the original 6.50x16" tires.

After adjusting/servicing the steering gear (and all steering system parts), and after doing the Shop Manual steering system adjustments, and after playing with the tire pressure, the truck steers and turns and tracks much better than it did with bias ply tires.

I'm not looking for a perfect match. I just thinking a narrower tire and rim with the proper set-back will steer a lot better than the 8 inch rally wheels with 235-70's that are on it now. Finding it hard to locate old-school rims. May have to go with Coker

If you can only find 4 inch wide rims they are ok to use (that was the case on my 55 1st series)
