go onto a 1946 chevy (216) truck...When I bought
the panel the PO. handed me a couple of boxs of
motor parts...but there was no carb..any help will
be greatly appreciated.

216's were originally equipped w/ Carter W-1 from 1937 through1948, then they received Rochester "B"s, but beware, the 216 has a smaller carb mounting on the intake....so 235 Rochesters won't fit.
Somebody else here will probably post the spacing between the carb studs for a 216.
Aftermarket replacement carb would've been the Carter YF.
Either the W-1 or the Rochester B are decent carbs.
