Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2016 Posts: 52 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2016 Posts: 52 | I know this subject has been addressed many times but this has me puzzled! My steering box had some excessive play in the steering wheel and visible side to side movement at the outer bushing near the pitman arm. When I saw that the sector shaft adjusting screw had the jam nut discarded and the screw end fully in flush with the cover, I assumed the box was worn beyond repair. I did not bother to check for end play at the roller bearings on the steering shaft. Upon disassembly, I was surprised to see almost no visible wear on the sector shaft teeth or the matching gear. also the worm and recirculating balls have almost no end play. Is it possible for worn bushings and possibly loose steering shaft roller bearings to have such a profound impact on sector shaft screw adjustment? Maybe a rebuild kit will fix it up after all. If the sector moves side to side before rotating, all the input from the steering wheel to take up said movement is wasted. I would rebuild it and see what you get. If the bearings are in good shape, you can get replacement bushings pretty cheap at a local bearing and bushing dealer if there is one in your town. They are common sized bushings and the seal can be had from NAPA or other local parts house. Worm gear bearings are not easy to get local, I had to go through one of the parts venders listed in the links above. With the sector screw turned in all the way like you describe I think those bearings or the adjustment of them will make a big difference. If you get those right and replace that outer sector bushing it will probably feel like a new box. | | |
