Gotcha.

I was reading back through a search trying to find a source for an original style fuel pump from my 1935 1!1/2 ton Chevy. No luck (of course!). However, I stumbled across something regarding my 1958 1 1/2 ton GMC (370) grain truck. I'm always looking for threads about the two speed axle. Shortly after I got it the electric shift motor quit working. The brushes had worn completely down. I ended up flipping the brushes and shimming them out. I do use the truck for heavy loads frequently on the farm and split shift it a lot so I know I need to be on the lookout for a permanent fix.

I just read in an old thread that even GMC didn't have electric two speed until the early 60's. Is this correct? I'm the third owner of my truck and it's been very untouched right down to all of the oil change stickers and records. I can't imagine another farmer paying to swap it out - most do what I did for months: get it into high and leave it there. When did electric two speed come into play for the 370?

The dealers that sold big rigs had a lot of leeway as to how they ordered and sold their trucks. Buyers could choose their preference for specific types of equipment, within reason. Is there a specification sheet (sometimes a metal tag) on the inside of the glove box door? If so, it usually lists the engine, trans, and rear axle options the factory installed.

The electric 2 speed shifts a lot smoother then the vacuum.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

The tag is there. I'll have to look at it. Originally this guy ordered two trucks just alike and hauled a distance, so electric makes sense. I'll look when I'm in that shed later.

More than likely you have an Eaton rear. It will have a red push/pull switch on the gear shift lever.

Old style replacement Eaton motors can be found, you just need to search, they were used by all truck manufacturing companies.

If you take the motor off and into a local old time electric motor guy (one who fixes not replaces), brushes should be able to be found to replace those.
