I'm converting to a power steering kit that puts a 69-87 box on the outside of the frame. Trying to decide what to do about a steering column. Later model tilt Chevy? or IDIDIT column? or modify the original? Have you ever cut an original column to accept a bearing and universal joint? I see a u-joint offered that converts from the smooth original round shaft to the common DD. I am concerned about a failure-proof connection to the original round shaft. Also where to cut the original shaft and tube.
Another question - How likely am I to find a junk yard power steering box in good condition, or should I just spring for a new one and not take the chance?
I'd like to hear what choices others have made.

redwing: I've done a few of these conversions. Just finished one 2 days ago. I cut the column about 2"s away from the firewall, but cut the shaft a couple inches longer to fit a u-joint to it. I mill 2 flats on the end of the shaft to create a double D. Fit a bearing inside the end of the column. On this last conversion I used a 58-65 Ford pump that has the reservoir on top of the pump. I make my own pump mounting brackets that bolt to the front of the engine in 3 places which is a very clean looking design with easy adjustment. This setup is for using the original generator by adding a double pulley to it and running a separate belt to the pump. Very nice looking and working setup. I'd be willing to make the mounting brackets if needed. Dave V

Just curious... Have you guys ever thought of doing electric power steering? I had never heard of it until a friend had a shop add it to his 50 ford p/u. It is very clean looking, no pump to add, motor is pretty small. With key switch "on" you can turn the wheels with one finger.

I don't know anything else about this but I was impressed with how clean it looks and how well it works. I'm thinking of adding this to a hard steering tractor that I have???

Bob.

Adding power steering is only half of project. Replacing my sloppy, worn-out original steering box is the other half.

DaveV- do you use junkyard power steering boxes for your projects or buy new/rebuilt?

Thanks for the reply DaveV. Good advice. I have the ability to mill the shaft double D and fabricate about any bracket. My 235 has an alternator with a very small single pulley. I plan to drive the steering pump from a double water pump pulley on the 235 until I find and upgrade to a small block V8 with a multi-groove crank pulley.

Another option is to use an electro hydraulic power steering pump. They mount anywhere and the hoses run to the gear box just like ones from a belt driven pump. We used Toyota MR2 ones till they got scarce and very pricey. Now ones for a Mazda 3 can be found on ebay in the $100-$200 dollar range.

Redwing: I do use junk yard steering boxes and never had a problem. I did do a conversion on a 49 with a 58 235 using a double water pump pulley and had to move the radiator forward for clearance issues. Dave V

Ok - Now the next task is to find a double water pump pulley for my 235 long shaft water pump. I know that a short shaft pump is also available for this engine but I prefer not to change it. I may attempt to fabricate a double from two pulleys, but aligning the second pulley without wobble will be a good trick.
