Recently, in General Truck Talk, the question of creating a fender dimple for the spare tire came up.
There is a Tech Tip here at the forum that describes the procedure. But what isn't clear are some of the dimensions and positioning of the template. From the Tech Tip picture you can see that the template is located 5 3/4 inches away from the inside of the fender which would leave something to the outside. Can't read that dimension. Also, can't tell how far up from the bottom to locate the template. AND, does the vertical axis have to be tilted to some degree. Is so, how so?

P.S. Is there a building plan for fabricating your own mount? The ones that come up on ebay have a rather large asking price for for a few rods and a plate w/ threaded studs.

I don't have the answer to your prolem... but do you know how the bracket attaches to the bed? There are special holes through the bed angle and wood that attaches to a angle to the bottom of the bed. And also, do you know how the bracket attaches to the side of the bed? I would suggest try finding a dimpeled finder. Once in a while you will find one on e-Bay. Good luck!

P.S. There is a little more involved than the diimple. Do you have the bracket? How does the bracket attach?

1953 was the first year for this option on the AD"s. If you have a 53 (without this option)or a pre 53, then you will have to do modifications to the bed to make the bracket to fit, like driling holes in the proper places.

That's the color my wife wants me to paint it.
Looking at the photo, there isn't much margin for error. Is there enough room to get a towel between the dimple and the tire?
Can you measure the distance from the the decortive accent bump on the bottom front side of the fender to where the bottom of the dimple starts?
I'll assume that the dimple is absolutely perpendicular to the tire. Having the inside demension ( 5 3/4 inches from the inside) and the up from the bottom should place it just about right. The bracket placement can probably be adjusted somewhat.
As far as the bedside structure that supports the spare bracket, I haven't a clue. I would assume that there is some re-enforcing backing plate there to capture the bolts from the bracket. Is there anything obvious?

The guy who is doing the body/paint said he could do the surgery given the right dimensions. I'll be getting those off an orginal 53' soon.

There is a fundamental problem here. You have a 59'. I have a 52'. Second series vs. 1st series. Your dimple is definately different than a 1st series fender dimple.
But appreciate your generosity.

rattletrap 52, you are right, there is a fundamental problem here, there is not such a thing as as 52 second series vs. 1st series, 54-55 yes. And of course his 59 fender wll not fit your 52 bed!!

You're right AD. Slipped a bit when I included the 2nd series for his 59'. But you get the picture.

Being helpful is exactly what this forum is all about. Be it advice, directions, links, been there done that, life long learning or giving things away, we are all (?) here for that reason.
