I went through the tech tips, and there is a 12 volt GENERATOR, and a 12 volt ALTERNATOR, I would like to use the generator for appearance sake (why, I don't know, those six stacks bear no resemblance to a stock engine, but I am weird like that) But I have also heard the power with a generator isn't stable enough or clean enough. Any ideas? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,440 Moderator - The Electrical Bay | | Moderator - The Electrical Bay Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,440 | It sounds like an interesting project. If you don't get any answers here, we can move it to the HiPo section.

The injectors were triggered by a set of dual points riding on a cam on the distributor shaft below the breaker plate. If you can find one of those distributors you might be able to use it to fire the injectors with a minimal amount of electronics. The Volvo had a batch injection system where three injectors fired at once, and the other three were triggered on the next turn of the crankshaft. I owned a 1974 Volvo 164 with that system, and it was reliable, and spooky fast for a 4-door sedsn. Jerry

I am pretty sure I will need to go 12 volts, and there is the need for clean power, and have heard a generator won't provide stable enough power for the electronics. There is a couple of people on here that have done EFI conversions, I was hoping to pick their brains, Or is that in the tech tips too? I have spoken to hilborn, they can convert the injector body, and provide the brains but I will have to make a spacer or something because the injectors will hit the valve cover, not to mention #6 stack hits the firewall. There are couple of other options out there for that part, but right now I am trying to determine which way to go for the power. I even contemplated using 2 6 volt batteries, charge them in parallel, but pull the power off in series, if that could be done, I'm not even sure of that. I know we used to get 12 volts out of a 48 volt battery bank by just tapping one of the 4 batteries when I worked on the boats. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 693 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 693 | I'm just spitballin' here: They do make 6v to 12v DC-DC converters. Consider driving your ECM only with one of these (there is one on eBay for <$20 that can drive 4A/48W load - you'd have to check the current draw of your computer/injectors). It says there is 40mV of ripple on the output which may or may not cause problems with your ECM. I'd put a large electrolytic capacitor on the output of the DC-DC converter if i were to try this.
I put a GM TBI system on a small block in a Camaro i built, and all of the sensors (there are only 5: IAC, O2, Temp, MAP, throttle position) were driven/monitored by the computer, so if the computer was running off the 12v then its possible the system would work. A multiport injection system may need more current, i don't know.
you could try the DC-DC converter idea before going to your twin 6V battery approach which should also work. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 1,847 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 1,847 | I don't think the entire engine management system draws much at all, but I don't know any exact numbers. Hilborns setup utilizes batch firing, which would be just fine, except I would really like sequential, just because. (yep, just weird that way) I have been looking into AEM systems, and there is a fella in arizona that does conversions too, but his are an extra $1,000. But this is good stuff, I'll check into it. And thanks for all the suggestions. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 Crusing in the Passing Lane | | Crusing in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 | Interested if one or two injectors will work best in siamese ports? Two would undoubtedly work better. I am still trying to get hold of one fella that has done this.(actually does International harvester conversions for a living) however the manufacturer doesn't really make any difference to the computer. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 1,847 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 1,847 | so I decided to bite the bullet and go with the powermaster alternator that looks just like a generator. It doesn't seem like I am going to get around going to 12 volts. Now I need to decide which way to go for the injection... Then the fun begins. | | |
