I think there should be a 1/4" gap or so to prevent rubbing? I bolted them to the rear fender and running board with that amount of gap but when I try to bolt on the long bracket for the splash apron to running board, it will pull it down to have something like a 2" gap or more.
Is there something I'm missing? It seems if the splash apron is bolted to the rear fender with the tab and it has a good amount of small gap (about 1/4") the bracket should fit to the running board also?

I am guessing you are talking about the splash aprons on the side of your truck in front of the rear fenders and behind the cab? Those aprons should bolt directly to the bed sides and running boards. The support brackets do fit to the splash aprons and running boards. You may have to adjust the brackets and aprons to fit properly. I had to do some minor flexing and bending to get my splash aprons to fit on my '49 3100. I placed some 1/4" diameter stainless steel washers between the running boards and splash aprons more to prevent water from hanging in between the running boards and bottom of the splash aprons. After flexing and bending I was able to get the aprons to fit just where I wanted them. You may have to loosen the running boards a little also and a second set of hands will help a lot. Hope this helps.
