There are intake port "lumps" by an outfit called T6. The concept makes sense* to me, and claims a 10% increase over stock. A bit of work, but it looks like a clever mod.

What do y'all think?

Are you planning to run full throttle frequently, run a radical cam, and are willing to take a drastic hit in low end and midrange torque in exchange for a 10% horsepower gain? If so, go for it. There's no free lunch in the performance business.

I'm actually planning to do a lump port modification on a 230 engine, along with a set of oversize valves and a lot of porting and polishing, but the engine is headed for a very lightweight Excalibur fiberglass-bodied roadster. I'm planning for a 6K+ RPM redline with three side draft carbs and a pretty radical camshaft, so the engine will spend very little time in the low to midrange RPM area. I'll also be doing some extensive tuning on a bellhousing dyno before the engine goes into the car.

Of the inline sixes, for the "daily driver with thump," which would you modify?

The "thump" is the engine running badly, re-breathing exhaust gas and misfiring, with less low speed power than a stock engine.
Was that what you wanted?

Well, thump is a word that I came up with to describe extra torque and power. I'd like an inline-six with some kick that's also dependable for daily use.

What are putting it in? What transmission? What rear end?
You can make more significant improvements in performance without loosing around-town driveability by leaving the engine alone and choosing the right transmission and rear end. A 5 speed with overdrive (like a T-5) will absolutely bring an inline 6 alive.

Dollar per horse power, you are better off with a small block 350. It will be way cheaper, have more power, idle smooth, and if you shop around a decent warranty can be had. Not saying you can't make a 250 run decent, but it will cost quite a bit of money, drivability, and fuel mileage. If you really want a 6 cylinder with more power, look for a 292, it should bolt in with a little motor mount swapping. Just so you know, 292 are really hard on gas mileage.
You are better off with a different transmission, just a carl suggested, and rebuild the engine as is.

350's are like belly buttons- - - -everybody's got one, and most of them are boringly similar. Thinking outside the box is worth complimenting. Your favorite ice cream is plain vanilla, right?

Much as I like older and smaller engines there's a point where it's just not fast enough*.
Don't be the guy who spends $5,000 on a 292, winds up with 250 hp, and starts thinking about nitrous.

All I was saying is, don't expect a bunch of power from the 250, and still be able to drive it like a normal everyday truck. Small motors take big rpm to make big horse power. I agree 100% about the 350, everyone has one, except they are all Corvette motors. But, if you are budget minded and want decent power, the small block is the only way to go.

I'd rather have a 360 AMC V8!
