I have a situation where my 1/2 ton original frame is just about had it,rust, stress cracks and cracked crossmember. Heres the delimma, i bought a 3/4 ton truck for the cab and other vital parts. It did come with a complete redone and painted frame but i had no real liking for the longer frame and where i live well selling it would not be easy. Has anyone shortened them for the 116 inch wheel base for the 1/2 ton, i know there is some re fit work for parking brake, hangers, drive shaft, running boards etc.Has anyone done this and how do i go about it. I have whatched newer c10's ( 69/70) done from long box to short box and i do have a certified welder in my area that can do the proper work. Please help!

Make the frame cut in a straight section at a 45 degree angle for maximum length of the weld bead, and use fish plates inside and out for reinforcement. That's how we did it on tractor-trailer rigs that carried a lot more stress than a pickup frame. I've shortened and lengthened frames that way with no problems. You should be aware that the springs, axles, and a lot of other items are different on a 3/4 ton so you'll probably encounter a lot of fit and interchange problems.
