I am replacing rear axle on 1950 3600 for a 12 bolt chevy rear and axle. I disconnect universal to differential yoke from rear driveshaft. At this point should drive shaft slip out? It seems to slide some 3 or 4" but then stop, not sure if it should just slide off of connection point at center member or additional removal of driveshaft components are needed. Service manual is really weak on rear driveshaft removal.

You're trying to dissemble the slip joint on the rear shaft? To do so unscrew the keeper for the seal on the internally splined slip yoke.

I usually don't do that though, instead remove driveshaft at transmission or at the center yoke if it has u-bolts and is easier.

Yes I am trying to disassemble the slip joint at least or actually the rear driveshaft, because this will need to be modified or replaced because of the new 12 bolt rear replacement. Is it more recommended to replace whole rear driveshaft? or can it be modified from slip joint? Not sure if there is any ability to do that at the slip joint.

If you will have it modified the driveshaft shop will need the shaft section complete with a yoke on each end. That way if/when they cut one end off and weld it or another back on they can align that yoke correctly with the yoke on the other end.

So you could pull apart the slip yoke to remove the back end of the shaft, but you also need to remove the slip yoke from the vehicle.

To illustrate how the slip yoke is assembled look at page 6 in this PDF, the exact yoke you have may be on that page, and if not the picture is still good.
