Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2016 Posts: 37 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2016 Posts: 37 | I put a 1959 235 engine in my 1949 Chevrolet pickup. It is a bear when it is cold. I have put in new points, condenser, distributor cap, vacuum advance, plugs, wires, rebuilt the rochester B carb twice, and it still gives me fits when it is cold. It sits there and idles beautifully and it runs much better when it finally warms up, but it still feels as though it is starving a little bit.
Any suggestions. Thanks. Would appreciate any advice. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 1,922 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 1,922 | Does it still have a choke pull-off diaphragm? How was the choke blade adjusted? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2016 Posts: 37 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2016 Posts: 37 | It is a manual choke, but even when I close it half way it still coughs. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,061 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,061 |

Closing your manual choke cable half-way isn't where it should be for dead cold - it's still too lean. The choke blade is normally fully closed when cranking, but once it starts you should open it 5/32" measured between the edge of the choke blade and the throat. Use the stem of a 5/32" drill for this, and mark the cable position in the cab with a piece of tape or a stop. The Model BV diagram shows where http://www.chicagocarburetor.com/pdf/Instructions-Rochester-B-BC-BV.pdfThe truck can and should be driven in that position at light throttle. Open the choke with the cable gradually as the manifold heats up. You'll know it's still too lean when it hesitates as you roll the throttle on. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2016 Posts: 20 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Sep 2016 Posts: 20 | You might also make sure the thermostat isn't stuck open. If it is slow to warm up the heat riser and thermostat are 2 of the most common problems. You also have to remember that it takes longer to heat up 700 pounds of steel than it does 300 or so pounds of steel and aluminum in newer lighter engines. If you think your 235 runs cold for too long try waiting for the V12 diesel in an M60 tank to warm up. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 1,922 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 1,922 | 300 or so pounds of steel and aluminum in newer lighter engine
Corvair? 215 Buick? Can't think of any modern engine under 400. My Toyota 3.0 L6 is about 500. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,215 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,215 | What carburetor did you use?
If you are using a carb from a smaller engine, 216, it may never run right.
