The only thread difference I know is that some have a taper and some the threads are straight though the both of them have the same thread per inch.
So either one should fit but the straight thread one will not screw in as deep if the female hole was tapped NPT. The bigger ones have a tapered thread, 1/8" NPT pipe threads. Most of the fittings found on tie rods, ball joints, etc. are 1/4-28 and install with a 5/16" hex wrench or socket.
