I am adding power steering to my 56 chev 3100 and I am putting on a gear box from a later model pu. I removed all of this from a donor 350 engine and am trying to put it on my 350. The problem comes in with the altenator on there is not much room for the pump. The altenator is mounted on the drivers side same as pump was. Can I move the altenator to the other side with a different bracket? Any ideas would be welcome.

Peruse your local yard to get ideas on mounting locations and mounting brackets.

There were several right side alternator mounts on ones that came with the a/c compressor mounted on the left. Why they had it to where you run the a/c hoses across the engine I don't know but they did.

been there done that. Either picked over or too new. Thought maybe someone had a picture of their early 70's 350 with ps and no air.

If your truck came with a V-8 and has the stock short pump and the V-8 core support there isn't much room for both as you described.
However, if you converted over from a 6 cyl to a V-8, there are all sorts of stock components available and lot's of room with the radiator in the 6 cyl position.
I used all of the components from a 74 Malibu (actually same as trucks of the same era) which included the balancer, lower pulley, upper pulley, alternator brackets (right side, upper), PS pump & brackets, and long water pump. The PS pump mounts to the WP. This was an AC car but I didn't use the AC components. I believe they used this configuration for many years on AC & non AC vehicles.

I am taking a 350 from a 72 c10 without ps. Went to junk yard and got all the brackets and water pump. It wasn't till I went to put it on that I noticed the altenator would not fit. Now I need to move the alternator to the other side. Just wanted to know what the brackets look like. Could order online if I knew what I am looking for.

Look in just about any aftermarket parts store catalog, they usually have pictures of brackets.

Trucknut: go to http://www.alangrovecomponents.com. I did something similar on my 48 w a 327; and kept my AC on the pass side and the alt on the driver side. The ps pump is mounted below the alternator. Their stuff is well designed and heavy duty and reasonably priced. Good luck. Dave

Basic alternator mounting, as you know, is: sleeve and long bolt at the bottom, replacing an engine bolt or using a dedicated threaded hole. The "top" is a bar bracket with a curved slot for adjustment. The long bar reaches out from another donor/existing bolt location. Alternators have several user modifiable clocking positions to accommodate your design/motor. The standard Chevy Alt mount hardware can be modified somewhat to suit. If you want fancy, use turnbuckle rod end ball joints.

The brackets that Bartamos posted is what mine uses for the stock configuration. I think I have seen them at O'Reilly's and Auto Zone. Most of the after market stuff is chrome though.

Here is a completely stock way the factory did it that gives both alternator and p/s pump lots of room.

The photo shown is for a mid 60's truck and it works well with that configuration. However, that era trucks use center engine mounts and the PS pump bracket bolts to the mount pad on the front of the engine. That is a problem for a 56 using the stock bird leg front motor mounts because both would have to use those same mount positions. The later style PS pump bracket hangs off the water pump and will clear the stock 56 mounts.

He is not using stock 56 front mount is he? He has a 72 350.
Let us know if you have long water pump. 6 15/16 from mounting surface to hub. That is a key to bracket type.
1972 is right on the transition for water pumps. If you have short water pump, you may need to get the brackets shown in coilover pic. They use the exhaust manifold bolts.
If you want it on other side, it is possible but pretty expensive. Do you plan on making a bracket or two or buying? The stock 1972 350 used what is called high mount alt brackets as coilover pic. In 73 I think they went long water pump and moved alt to pass side and tucked in down in closer to drive pulley.
In the 60's is when GM started using alt instead of generator....so at first they just mounted them more or less like gens.
