A few weeks ago I started to hear this clankity clank sound from under the hood. I thought it was the waterpump bearing going out, but it was the pulley. It had cracked/split connecting all 4 bolt holes together making the middle section loose making the out part flap. It even started cracking up the one side too. :o I welded it up on the outer side, and was fine for a few days, but it started again. :rolleyes: I went to a few yards today before finding a pulley, I get home, and it's 3/8th shorter depth on it. What years, and engines can I get the waterpump puley from that will work on my '62 235? Also what causes the pulley to crack?

I would also bet the bearing on your water pump is on it's way out, too. They don't like too much side load.

I my search for a new pulley, I learned about a reinforcement washer that GM put under the pulleys to help stop cracks from developing. I put one on with the replacement pulley and have had no problems since. I'm not sure what year GMC started doing this but I have seen them on just about every year of truck over the years of junkyard explorations. They could have been added aftermarket by the dealer also.
It would be easy to make one. It's just a disc of flat steel with the edge beveled to nest inside the pulley's inside radius. I think they were about 3/16" thick.
