I'm putting a 292 six with a NP440 transmission into a '68 gmc. I'm not a mechanic so I'm trying to follow the manuals I have as closely as I can. One of them states that when installing a new clutch the flywheel and clutch assembly must be balanced. None of the other manuals I have mention balancing. I've checked around and can't find anyone in my area that balances flywheels any more. I was told the only place within reasonable driving distance that still does it takes several weeks to do it. One mechanic I talked to said that very few people balance them because it's so hard to get it done around here. How dangerous is it to skip this step? I don't want to take any chances that might cause me to have to take this all apart. Thanks for any advice.

Jeff

On a recent Pontiac V8 build I did, the machine shop that I use, that specializes in crankshafts told me if the engine is balanced internally, the flywheel will be balanced by itself. I didn't have it done and felt no vibrations or anything odd. I really doubt you will have any problems. A fellow I work with came from UPS, he was one of the truck mechanics. Listening to some of his stories about the 292's, I don't think you could ever hurt one.

When the pressure plate is manufactured or reconditioned, it's balanced as part of the process. Ditto for the flywheel. At the normal RPM range a street engine is likely to run, extra balancing isn't necessary. If you're planning to rev one into the 6K RPM range or above, it might be a good idea to do some more precise balancing, but the engine is going to need some detail work to approach that speed.

I felt compelled to open your link to see who else asked the question...

My setup has operated with no problems for over a 1000 miles so far. I think all is okay.
