The battle is between the throttle setting screw and the idle setting screw. I think I don't have enough throttle (ie: gas) coming into the carb and that is why she's stalling out on me. So, I don't know just how these two screws relate with one another. On the W-1 carb it says in the manual to back out the idle screw 1/2 to 1 full turn. I can not find just how much throttle you should have initially (ie: RPM). I'm thinking to increase the throttle first and then go to the idle screw and trim the speed back to the 475 RPM that is specified if that is possible. I'm also thinking that this will help my vacuum advance function. Am I on the right track?
Oh, one more thing. Where I live is at 1800 feet above sea level. Could my elevation also be causing me issues with performance?

Once the RPM gets above 1,000 or so, none of the adjustments will have any effect on the mixture- - - -it's all internal after that. Do you have the correct carb for the engine? At least two thirds of "carburetor" problems are actually ignition or mechanical problems. There is a "transisiton" system as the engine makes the jump from idle to cruise conditions, usually a couple of metered holes drilled into the airflow from the idle jet, directly above the idle mixture adjusting screw. These are precision-drilled holes, and they're not adjustable. That's one reason (of many) that just any old carburetor won't bolt on and work well. The calibration is for a specific engine setup and sometimes it changes for a different transmission or rear end ratio, etc.
Adjust the mixture and idle speed for the smoothest idle. The rest of the performance is up to the internal calibration of the carb, and the mechanical condition of the engine. Jerry
