I would like repaint my tailshaft housing and replace the gasket. I've unbolted the tailshaft housing, removed the rear oil seal and speedo gear.

When I pull the housing, the tailshaft wants to come along for the ride. I'm afraid if I pull too much, I'll run into trouble with my gears.

Is it possible to slide off the tailshaft housing without any further work?

Thanks much for any input.

Look for a small sheet metal plate held on by two screws on the underside of the tailshaft housing. Under there, there's a big snap ring that engages a groove in the output shaft bearing. It requires a set of expanding snap ring pliers with flat tips to hold the ring expanded while you pull the housing off. If it's been there a long time, it might be a little stubborn.

Hello Jerry, thanks for the reply. I took a look and a photo to show the housing. I don't have a sheet metal plate.
I'm assuming I can slide the housing off the tailshaft, but for whatever reason, the tailshaft wants to come with the housing.

On that transmission the tailshaft will not come off without disassembling the transmission. Once you have the two sections separated you can get to the snap ring if needed. You can replace the rear seal with the housing in place.

Hello Fred, I really appreciate the feedback.
One last question... if I remove the snap ring for the bearing, will the tail housing come off?
I've found that I can access the snap ring without disturbing the trans. Here's a photo. Snap Ring

Thanks, Scott.

The housing will pull off once the snap ring is expanded, but you risk loosing the roller bearings at the front of the shaft if you pull the shaft back to much. 1/2" is likely to be to much.
I would at the very least pull the side cover so you can watch to be sure the roller bearings do not fall out.

It can be done as Dave stated. I always just take them apart as they generally need something anyway. It's probably a good time to check for wear on the syncro engagement ring and the shift forks. Common wear components.
