I've unbolted the tailshaft housing, removed the rear oil seal and speedo gear.
When I pull the housing, the tailshaft wants to come along for the ride. I'm afraid if I pull too much, I'll run into trouble with my gears.
Is it possible to slide off the tailshaft housing without any further work?
Thanks much for any input. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,851 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,851 | Look for a small sheet metal plate held on by two screws on the underside of the tailshaft housing. Under there, there's a big snap ring that engages a groove in the output shaft bearing. It requires a set of expanding snap ring pliers with flat tips to hold the ring expanded while you pull the housing off. If it's been there a long time, it might be a little stubborn. Jerry

I don't have a sheet metal plate. I'm assuming I can slide the housing off the tailshaft, but for whatever reason, the tailshaft wants to come with the housing. Once you have the two sections separated you can get to the snap ring if needed. You can replace the rear seal with the housing in place. Fred

One last question... if I remove the snap ring for the bearing, will the tail housing come off? I've found that I can access the snap ring without disturbing the trans. Here's a photo. Snap Ring Thanks, Scott.

I would at the very least pull the side cover so you can watch to be sure the roller bearings do not fall out.

I always just take them apart as they generally need something anyway. It's probably a good time to check for wear on the syncro engagement ring and the shift forks. Common wear components. Fred
