I am looking at adding rear turn signals to my Carryall and want to be authentic. Does anyone know if 1939 chevy automobile tail-lights are the same as used on the Carryalls?
These are mounted high up on the body, left and right. The curvature in the mounting surface of the 1939 tail lights looks to be a very close fit to the curvature of the Carryall body in that area.

Any help is appreciated

Best Regards, all

Get the lights that fit? Chev's of the 40's and others have them.

My tail lights are off of a 1939 Oldsmobile, not sure how different they are from '39 Chev. Mine do fit perfectly though.

Those 1939 Oldsmobile lamps look very nice.

If riverdancer9 wants to be "authentic", that mounting base is not the same as the mounting bases on the 47-55 GM panel-body truck's GM accessory lamps.

My understanding is they are the same as used on the '39 Chevy.

I could easily purchase a new set of these from numerous suppliers. But I wish to keep my vehicle completely original, and have found a pair of the 1939 rear lights that are vintage, and original.

So my question really is: Did GM re-purpose the 1939 tail lights as the turn signals on the AD series of Carryalls?

The mounting base and dimensions look to be identical between the 1939 and AD design Carryalls. I am referring to The Filling Station part number BA-356, which is called out for both the '39 chevy as well as the AD Carryall. Pages 204-205 in the catalog.

You cannot keep a vehicle completely original by adding parts.

Riverdancer9, if you will substitute "Period Correct" for "Completely Original" you will make Cletis and other purists happy. chug

riverdancer9, my lamps have a faint stamping on the top of body, OLDSIG. There should be a weep hole on the bottom, in the chrome collar. Also, as Tim mentioned, they mount different from the newer ones. Be careful that you don't mount them too far back, although with yours being a Suburban it might not matter. On my panel, the doors hit when opened all the way 180*.

The correct ones are stamped DORAY. And Leo is correct, Suburban doors don't open to 180° like panel doors do.

Here is the hole-drilling template for 47-55st panel-body signal lamps.

Both types of panel-body rear-door-stop styles should open with the side signal lamps mounted in holes in that location.

Thank you Tim - I assume that the sketch, when printed will be to scale. And that the door opening is the rear opening for either clamshell or barn-door configuration - is that correct?

Thank you - riverdancer9

That is correct, as long as your PC software prints PDF "to scale".

I'd print out the pattern, and
mark the holes on the body in chalk/crayon/marker, and
tape the lamp to the body aligned with the hole markings, and
gently/slowly open the rear door, and
hope the doors do not touch the lamp.

Plus you can stand back from the side and the rear to see if they "look right."

I have a couple of questions.

Why does Chevs of the 40's show 1947-53 Tail Light Assembly -Panel & Suburban
Don't these bullet directional lamps assemblies fit on all 1947-55 single unit bodies?

Jim Carter's Tech article - Panel Truck Tail Light -- shows lamp assembly part# 916877.
Isn't this the same lamp assembly used on all the 1947-55 single unit bodies?
It does say, These small bullet shaped lights were actually from a 1939 Chevrolet passenger car.

Then Jim Carter has this Tech Article - 1947-1955 Tail Lights read the last paragraph.
Its says, Turn single option today 1947-1955 single unit body.
It does say again, These small bullet shaped lights were actually from a 1939 Chevrolet passenger car.

Then there is this RPO 249 Dual Tail and Stop Lamp In the 1947-54 Factory Assembly Manual.
Which shows lamp assembly part# 897461 LH and 897462 RH.
Is this the same as part# 916877 ?

Here is what I know is a original 1954 Lamp Assembly RH , DURAY.

This is what it shows in the 1929 - 1957 Chevrolet Master Parts & Accessories Catalog Group # 2.679
It shows 1954-55 part# 897461 Left and 897462 Right. But not part# 916877
It shows 1939-52 Part# 927639 L, and 927640 R
Where there different bullet directional lamps assemblies made just for the 1954-55 single unit bodies?

Here is rubber Tail Light Pads that are to go in between the lamp housing and the truck body.
There is also a reinforcement plate that goes on the inside.

Jim Carter shows them as 1947-Early 1955 (Accessory) Panel and Suburban

The difference in parts numbers may have something to do with one wire or two wire lamp assemblies.

Also if you ordered the RPO 249 Dual Tail and Stop Lamp for the single unit body truck.
Did they put the Tail/stop Lamp on the rear left barn door?

riverdancer9, back to your original question, check the overall length of the '39 Chev lights. My Olds lights are actually about an inch longer than the correct ones.
