Hi All,

Has anyone powder coated their hinges/springs? Does the coating last or will it flake off on the springs?

thanks,
skipper

The problem will be getting the inside of the springs down to bare metal. This it the only way to make powder coating adhere to the springs long term. You also have the problem of the movement of the coils as they uncoil and recoil.

as your local powder coating shop, the last thing they want to do is do a job for you that won't work or hold up and have their name on it.

I don't think it will flake off but some consideration of some other things are needed.

In MY experience powder coating is pretty dang tough overall.
The problem will probably come in where the hinges "swivel" or slide together as they open and close. If your powder coating guy puts it on pretty heavy you will have a problem being tight. I had to cut some of the coating out of the edge of a belt tensioner and as Denny Graham would say "it tain't easy"!

I suspect the springs will do better than the hinges....and if you have to strip the powder coating off it is not an easy job. I know, I had to strip a set of big brackets!

Lastly, have a good talk with your powder coating man. He may have some tricks up his sleeve we don't know about.

The trick to getting most of the powder coating off is to use a torch and char it. Then a sandblaster or media blaster will take the charred remains right off.

I'd have them zinc plated or they can be plated black also. Check out D&B Plating in Minneapolis. I pickup and deliver parts to them from Polaris daily and they do fine work. It's much more durable than powder coating.

Thanks for all the good advise. I would zinc them but in the bay area is seems difficult to find a shop that works on small scale non commercial stuff.

I just had a set done for a 72 pickup that I was painting for a customer. these were new but you can glass bead them inside and out even the inside of the spring. we coated with silver it stayed on the spring but pealed at the hinge points.

I powder coated almost everything on my truck, but went with nickel plating on the hinges. The nickel is thinner than the powder and gets into the small crevices. I had a box of items coated (e.g. door striker plates, hood striker plate, hood hinges and springs, e-brake lever, etc) and the bill was about $50.
