When I got my first Borg Warner R10 (installed in a '57 Chevrolet) I had to completely remake the wiring harness from scratch. I never knew there was fuse, but after reading I've read where there should be a 20 amp fuse in the harness. Where should this fuse be located? Would inserting a 20 amp blade style fuse holder with blade fuse be acceptable?

Thanks,
Brandon

The fuse is in the relay that should be on the firewall......
I do not have an R10 on my Chevy truck but do have two R10 overdrive tranny`s installed on Ford cars and both have relays on the firewalls.

That's interesting. With my first 3 speed overdrive with a borg warner, I don't remember ever wiring up a relay.

You can use an open fuse on the fuse panel. The relay is part of the "factory" set up which also includes the solenoid, governor and kick down switch. Yes, Ford's used a fuse on the relay, GM had an inline fuse from the top terminal of the ballast resistor on early models.

Ohhh, OK. I feel like a dufus. I had to completely remake the harness on my first overdrive and I undid every wire and recrimped it back together. I remember this process but I have no memory of installing the relay. I went and got my car out of storage today and sure enough, there was a relay there on the core support with an inline fuse (a new one) that I had installed. I don't remember doing this at all.

That's really helpful information about the Ford's having the fuse on the relay and Chevy's didn't. I thought I had the wrong relay, but now I know mine is correct.

The fuse on a Ford is probably not a real must. I have driven Fords with BW OD for over 50 years and have never blown a fuse. I guess it would save your wiring if you got a short in the solenoid, but they usually just quit working.

Fred's the expert on these. I wired mine as per the manual and it looks like this...

Since I probably don't have my ballast resistor facing the right way on the firewall, I made a note to myself to wire the fused leg to the non-resistor side of the ballast resistor. However you say that...

I have more pics of my setup if you need. I think I got my harness from Jim Carter and it was a breeze to put in and very well made.

Best,

Jim

I really enjoyed the pictures of your custom setup for the kickdown switch. I wish I had seen yours before I did mine. I think your idea is cleaner than mine.

Here's a few pictures of when I made mine, which was 2012 I believe.

Thanks Vetteman61, but Fred is the guy who came up with that setup. When I was rebuilding my 319 and OD, he sent me a drawing for the bracket and paddle. Cable hardware holds it all on and makes it adjustable.

I think yours looks fine and, as they say, as long as it works, it's perfect.

Jim

P.S. Thanks for sharing the pics. I really enjoyed that!
