I have a 56 chevy long bed. I am at the point of sandblasting the frame.(cab off) I am not sure if I should paint the frame or have it powdercoated. Can someone give a ballpark figure on what it would cost to powdercoat? Is there some kind of undercoating that could be applied?

You may want to consider POR-15, Zero Rust or some other similiar product.

I just had the frame of my '40 sandblasted and powdercoated. Total cost was $350.00. Turned out great.

Did you leave your axles and springs on or did you take them off?

I had mine blasted and powder coated for $275. Bare frame, no axles, springs, etc. Springs may be a good thing to powder coat, but they'd need to be taken apart and done one individually.

I took absolutely everything off the frame, then disassembled, sandblasted, painted and reassembled my springs. I also had the front and rear axle/axle housing sandblasted and then painted. Paint is easier to touch up than powdercoating.

I'm at that point also. Everything (almost) is off the frame of my 52'. Went down to the local blast and coat. I'm looking at $550 for the frame. $200 for the rear with torque tube. Each brake drum is $25 if not masked. You then have them turned and that will remove the PC on the inside. Spindles are $70/pair. They do the inner fenders for $75/ea. I'm here in Southern California, so things might have an environmental fee attached. Sounds like the other guys got a bargin. But the thought of actually doing assembly and on something clean and new looking is almost unreal!
A question to the others; is it absolutely necessary to prime with a rest inhibator before powder coating?

I just got mine back from the PC shop and it looks awesome so if you are considering it it definitely worth it. Here are a few things I am doing different next time:

1. Make sure you do some research on the the powder coater some don't do all that great of a job.

2. After they sandblast the parts go look them over. Because there are rust pits and bends that are really noticable after the powdercoat goes on.

3. I have made 4 trips back to the pc shop cause I keep finding more parts that need done.

Rattletrap - powder coating is only done on absolutely bare metal, preferably very freshly sandblasted - no other coatings can be used or the powder doesn't stick

Have them mask w/ tape the inside surface so NO PAINT goes on the drum inside

Since i'll have my drums turned, the PC will be cut away.

might keep in mind that part of the job of brake drums is heat dissapation - there is a reason that drums have no coating from the factory

Another choice which I used on past projects would be DP-90 epoxy. You will still need to sand blast but it is darn near bullet proof. This also goes by the name chassis black.
