Hey guys,

im new here and i will have many questions about my 39' GMC. Just to give you a little background on this truck, i had in inherited this GMC from my father who passed away 20 some years ago and who knows how many more years it sat in the rain before he passed. I know nothing about trucks and i have decided to restore this one to a drive-ability condition. Im not looking to do a complete restoration as the cost would be to great, but just simply to get in running on the road.

My main question for now is to know about the engine and what kind of motor do i have? Is it the original motor or a later year? How can i tell what engine it is?

Also, i have taken pictures of the engine, but im not sure if im able to post them here.

Thanks!!

Welcome to Stovebolt, Sonny. First off, I'm sure your truck is a half ton, not quarter ton.

The best way to ID the engine is by the numbers cast into the block.

Images must be hosted elsewhere and linked to here, as described in the 'Image Posting Policy' linked to at bottom left of this page.

Is it a flathead or OHV? Engine SN? SN is stamped on starboard side, in casting number by starter.

The original engine for your truck would have been a 228 overhead valve engine, inline 6. There is a lot of good info on this site as well as the http://oldgmctrucks.infopop.cc/eve site.

Guys, Fred's link and the link on the bottom left are to the image policy, not the "how to". Here is the how to.
