My question is are all SM465 created equal? will an early model fit the later models? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 331 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 331 | The shape of the shifter itself may change from one application to another, but from the point where it goes into the top cover and on down they should all be the same.

Has anyone had this problem before and what did you do. I can try to raising the cab that might get the the access I need but if that crossmember is always going to be in the way should I try to work around it or remove it altogether. I really dont want to have to remove anything. Thoughts? http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums...6-4B0C-BA00-F0CBC29BF421_zpszszfbup4.jpghttp://i1062.photobucket.com/albums...A-4ED5-904F-DBC3B9C8506A_zpstyhlaf1x.jpg

I replaced the SM420 in my 59 Suburban with an SM465. I had to shorten the driveshaft since the 465 is longer but there were no issues with the cross member.
With the SM420 they made a few small changes to shift forks and if you change top covers, you can run into issues unless you stay within the same year group. Not sure on the 465 though. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2015 Posts: 208 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2015 Posts: 208 | I have a 1949 3800, I think it originally had the SM420. I am planning on lifting the cab and see if the SM465 will sit in there without removing the crossmember. The newer bell housing looks like it might touch the firewall so I might have to trim a little off the lip. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 1,453 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 1,453 | Why are folks changing out SM420s for 465s? SM420 is a good box IMHO.

It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Anyone know it it will clear the factory transmission crossmember without modification? | | |
