Has anyone had this problem before and what did you do. I can try to raising the cab that might get the the access I need but if that crossmember is always going to be in the way should I try to work around it or remove it altogether. I really dont want to have to remove anything. '47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

I replaced the SM420 in my 59 Suburban with an SM465. I had to shorten the driveshaft since the 465 is longer but there were no issues with the cross member.
With the SM420 they made a few small changes to shift forks and if you change top covers, you can run into issues unless you stay within the same year group. I am planning on lifting the cab and see if the SM465 will sit in there without removing the crossmember. SM420 is a good box IMHO. The SM465 is better. Be aware the SM 465 has a larger front brg. retainer. You need a bell housing with the larger hole.
