| | | | | Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 592 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 592 | Mike, Patrick's sells a reasonable kit for $80 that uses the single belt off the balancer, but uses the double pulley off of the compressor to allow for a dual belt installation.
I made my own brackets (stock '57 3600 235) when I installed AC about three years ago. I wanted the compressor on the top and the alternator on the bottom and all the kits that I saw (including Patrick's) were the other way around. Not too hard to do, but it did take a fair amount of time to mock up and fine tune. I enjoy the challenges of that kind of work, so it was a pleasant project for me. Mine uses a single belt. If you are interested in doing something similar, I'd be happy to provide pix and info.

You could also use the modified damper/pulley setup for a 283 or 307 V8 on the stovebolt that uses all-new parts to fabricate a 2-groove damper.

On mine, the compressor is fixed and the single belt is tensioned using the alternator mounting bolt as a pivot. If I did it over again, I would still keep the alternator on the bottom and the compressor on the top, but I would probably use Jerry's suggested approach for two belts utilizing the double pulley on the compressor instead of one long belt.
Personal preference on mounting the compressor low and the alternator high, but I did it this way to make it easier to get to the compressor and the fittings if required.

An A/C compressor pulls a pretty good load, and the belt needs to wrap around the pulley as far as possible. A short contact patch can result in belt slippage, squeal, and wear under load.
