I have had to have the head on my 51 gmc 270 rebuilt due to a valve failure. I am missing one of the parts to finish up putting it back together though. I am not sure what to call this part, either its the oil shield that sits on top of the valve spring or its called a valve spring retainer. I am not sure but both of these parts look identical to me. Either way, I am not sure where to find one of these little parts. The shop that rebuilt the head said he would have to have one of mine in hand to see if he had anymore laying around, but I've already got them all back on the engine. My contact at Oreilys couldn't come thru. Anybody know where I could pick one up ?

Thanks, Troy

I have a locked up 270 in a 59 GMC 1/2 ton that will be a spare parts engine. I have a lead on a running 302 that I plan on using. If you strike out let me know and show a pic of the part. I have not had the valve cover off it yet. They may move your post to parts wanted.

I do not know GMC engines. Though on top of my Chevy stovebolt the valve spring there is a metal cap. Looks like a small hat with a very wide brim that sits on top of the valve stem end and covers the top of the valve spring. The rocker arm pushes down on this "hat" to open the valve.

This "hat" is the valve spring rotator. My first thought when guessing what it was called an oil shield just as you did.

The valve spring keepers and valve spring retainer sit underneath the valve spring rotator.

I think Kanter Auto Parts sells the valve spring rotator with a new spring. Jeffrey

Thanks Jeffrey, that is exactly what I need. I will try and track them down and give them a call.

Much appreciated !

Need: retainer OD. Exh. or Int. Stem OD. Is spring side of retainer flat or stepped, if stepped, dimensions please.
