I was just wondering what steps should be taken to assure that my work will stick around. Should all the paint be taken off to bare metal before priming? How many coats of primer? Should the primer be sanded between coats? Any comments suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That paint has been on that truck for 47 years!! It's not coming off. If you need to apply bondo, then YES sand to bare metal and use 40 grit so that the filler gets a good grip.

Primer can be used to build up uneven surfaces. Sanding the primer with a block sander smoothes the panel. Otherwise just use enough primer to cover the bare metal.
