I am beginning to do some body work on my 58 apache. I was just wondering what steps should be taken to assure that my work will stick around. Should all the paint be taken off to bare metal before priming? How many coats of primer? Should the primer be sanded between coats? Any comments suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Curtis

Curtis - MartinSr is the 'pro' here on body and paint - you might take a look thru his "Basics" series before you dive in, especially the paint sections - collected here for our enlightenment

You do NOT have sand to bare metal. That paint has been on that truck for 47 years!! It's not coming off. If you need to apply bondo, then YES sand to bare metal and use 40 grit so that the filler gets a good grip.

Sand the primer between coats. How much primer depends on how uneven is your panel. Primer can be used to build up uneven surfaces. Sanding the primer with a block sander smoothes the panel. Otherwise just use enough primer to cover the bare metal.

Take it down to the bare metal, then you know what you have to work with. Anything can be hidden under paint.
