Hi, I recently picked up a decent daily driver 1965 GMC/Chevy pickup project truck. I say GMC/Chevy because the VIN is a GMC, but everything on the body and interior is Chevy. So I'm here to join the fun and find out some information!!

Welcome to the Stovebolt Page. Sounds like you have a very interesting truck.
Be sure to post questions in the appropriate forum and the guys will help you sort it all out. Maybe you have a FrankenTruck?
Got any pictures?

Although this Tech Tip is entitled a "Buyers Guide," it may help you with determining some of the things on your 60-66 truck since Woogeroo broke it down by GMC and Chevy.

You'll probably find like most of us, the more you learn about anything about your truck, the better off you will be.

Welcome to the site. Ask and ask and ask. We are all here to help.

joker,

The VIN is GMC TRUCK DD 1001PF21307A. I'm sure that someone probably started restoring it years ago and used a Chevy donor, but if it is a GMC I'll probably swap everything out for GMC parts. (There are already two 60-66 Chevs in town so it might be cool to be the only GMC.)

Thanks all. I'm excited to learn and work on it. I was hoping I had something like a Canadian export brought back to the States, but we'll see what it ends up being when it grows up.

no such thing as a "Canadian export", Canadian trucks were/are made in Canada .... if the "vin" you're seeing is on a title paper rather than a metal tag on the truck, someone has pulled a title switcharoo, find the vin stamping on the drivers frame rail below the front of the cab

Bill,

Thanks for the info. The VIN on the metal tag matches the paper title. I'll look again for it on the frame and hopefully find it. There's a lot of dirt and crud to scrape off under there.

"GMC TRUCK DD" is on one line I think and the actual VIN or serial number is on another line. Chevy's and GMC's had the DD. It means Delivery Date, however they did not use it until 66 and beyond, then the date was on another plate. Probably the plate embossing die was made and that portion not used as planed. There are some 66 Trucks with a total embossed date after DD.
Your "VIN" is a GMC number 1001= 1/2T short bed, P= built in Pontiac MI, F= 64-66 year. 21307= the production number built. I believe they started at 10,000 so the 11,307th built, A= 6000 GVW and less.
Nothing I see about your truck is GMC. Everything I see is Chevy, including Custom pillar trim. GMC did not usually stamp the frame, but you may find a Chevy frame number. If you do, you have a truck that was "doctored". As it is, I would examine the pillar plate rivets to see if they are original. Because obviously something is real sketchy. At any rate you have one of the most valuable bodies. Short bed, Fleet side, Big back window, custom cab, factory A/C vents, steel bed, automatic, Good condition, 64-66. Near holy grail.

If you can post pics of frame, interior and VIN plate, it would help a lot.

VIN tag, inside plate, frame

Phone takes poor pics sometimes. The plate inside was painted over and I had to scrape it off to read it. Almost didn't see it. The only numbers I found on the frame from the front to the rear of the cab are on the outside of the frame near the front of the cab. 2443630 8 17 77 67.

Top of frame just in front of A arm. Wire brush and wet it.
1965 ID plate Rivets were supposedly "Rosette" style. Yours are not. If you still care, describe or post pics of rear end suspension components. That could determine Chevy VS GMC. It's not a huge deal. A collector will not want it but it's been thru DMV, I assume, and no hicups. Lots of trucks have been re-bodied with Chevy parts and a few have been re tagged with a title and tag from something else(illegal unless thru DMV). Something is way off. Maybe nothing bad though. Reason for frame pics: GMC may be different than Chevy a little bit. I'm in touch with a person who can identify with pics. Not me.

I will try to get the pics tomorrow, but it may not be until tomorrow night that I can get them posted. I did see a post on another forum when I did a search for the numbers on the side of the frame. A guy has two Chevy's and a GMC, and the first 7 digits on their GMC were the same as on mine.
I sprayed some degreaser on the entire top of the frame from the cab forward and wiped it off, then rubbed some sand paper over it and didn't find anything.
It's been through the Illinois and Indiana DMVs with no issues that I know of. It had been titled last in 1992, and then when I got it last month.
Thanks for all of your help so far.

All the stampings I've seen (Chevys) were on the top. They matched most of the VIN. The side stamp could be VIN, my guess is a factory/mill/batch metal/fabrication date number. Not a good idea to use sand paper when looking for stamped numbers. Wire brush and cleaner. Some numbers were light stamped and possibly corroded, sanding will lessen the definition/readability. It is known that GMC hardly ever stamped their frames with VIN.

rear end

Hope these pics help. I know... I need to replace the rear end seal, it's leaking a little.

I didn't use the sandpaper much, mostly just the degreaser. Still didn't see anything though.

I believe GMC had leaf rear and Chevy had coil, you have leaf. So gotta think on this. If the rivets are legit, maybe a GMC chassis and cab structure with original info Plates. Loaded with Chevy body parts?
Both plates are in the correct place on body for 1965 GMC. The kick panel plate says the correct 305 V6 that it came with. All info says the rivets are NOT correct for 1965, but it is possible that the factory used other rivets if supplier problems and unknown reasons. The front frame/motor mounts were a little different between Chevy and GMC I think. Maybe there are remnants of a BB 305 V6 being in there? Guessing GMC frame with the plates from that GMC and has a Chevy body. Not a true Chevy or GMC.

Yeah, I'm thinking someone had a GMC truck that needed work, bought a Chevy parts truck and swapped out the body parts. They probably didn't want GMC and Chevy mixed and just swapped out the interior parts as well so that it all matched. Not like stranger things haven't happened before. As for the rivets, they probably popped off the tag to paint under it, then replaced it with new rivets, but then again I can see your point on the factory idea also.
So I think my plan for the future is to do some swapping and make it a GMC. And on top of that, I'd be the only GMC guy in town as the other two have Chevy's.
Also I plan on keeping the truck forever (don't we all say that?), so I'm not worried about trying to sell it as a collector piece.

lots more involved than 'swapping out' some parts, not sure a GMC gauge cluster would even fit in a Chevy dash, not to mention frame and powertrain differences .... I'd bet someone simply put the tags and papers from a GMC onto a Chevy truck that didn't have proper registration - not really an uncommon situation with vintage vehicles
