I believe that BENT does - you might send him an email. He's made some posts recently here in the paint and body forum. Find one, click on his profile, and you can email him through the 'bolt.

Good luck.

I am using ppg prods. on a 32 5 window ford. we hade the body blasted and then metalpreped then dp90 and then body work then dp90 and then i put on ncp271 thats where the problem lies after about 3 days of curring i start sanding with 320 and in some of the corners it was cracking an d kind of pealing up but just on the bodylines and inside corners so i freak out call my paint rep he comes out and siad i did not get enof coverage with dp90 so the ncp was getting under it hinse making cracks, then he tells me that i didn't even need the dp90 cause the ncp is a primer sealer so i sand out all the dp90 and just spray ncp and it cracks again. plus other little problems like major shrinkage after color sanding witch sucks cause no one wants to sand something more than once have you ever had any problems with ncp271

Hey gmckustom I also use ppg and this is a tough one . your rep is right the ncp 271 is a direct to metal primer sealer,I know you don't want to here this but start over now because this little baby will keep haunting you, there are two things that we need to know did you sand after you blasted and what kind of metal prep did you use.I personally have never used metal prep and have never had primer crack or peal, are you reducing yor primer,if your not and you put more than two wet coats and dont't cure it ,it will shrink cracking will happen if the material is to thick and ncp isn't much of a high build k38 over ncp is how I do it. so it still cracked once it was stripped again , it can only be one or all of these three things the metal prep the primer is on to thick or a bad batch of ncp 271 that has happened to me when I lived in a cold area take two pieces of scrap sheet metal use metal prep on one and not the other then prime see what happens then try with reduce and non reduce . I am really leaning towords the metal prep did you wipe it off or is it the kind that stays on and you really have to pour it on to make it crack I mean like actually pour it! and well if it is a bad batch then ppg can pay for all your heartache and frustration. but my recomendation is still start from the bottem again because whatever it is is still there and it wont go away until you find out what it is and make it go away ! hope this helps and send me some pics of the problem if you could keep me posted.

are you supposed to sand after blasting i had no idea. I used ppg metalprep i cant remember the number. I already used all of my ncp on the customers whole car so how could ppg tell if i had a bad batch and how can i tell if i get a bad batch. I wish i could just start over from the beginning but it is a customers car and i simple can't aford to re do it and the boss sure as hell won't. 1 year ago the painter at the shop i work at quite so guess who got to be the new painter. I went to wyotech were i was in a paint class but i never wanted to do it for a living so i was focusing more on my other classes, so any help or advice you can give me would be great. One more thing is it normal for your health to nose dive after you start painting. It's hard to breath, i feel light headed alot and get way more headaches than i used to before painting, andf feel overall slugish. just another sleepy eyed painter i guess

GMC, If you are experiencing health problems I would be concerned. If your job requires you to wear a respirator, your company is *supposed* to have you checked out by a physician at their expense to ensure that you are healthy enough to wear a respirator. Employers are required by law to provide employees with training regarding the proper use, care, and maintenance of their respirator (OSHA).

Also my husband is an executive with the North Dakota Workers Comp Fund. I just asked him about your situation, and he assures me that you should see a physician; the claim will be work related. So even if you are not medically insured, your company's workers comp insurance will have to pay for the visit. Don't waste time. See a physician.

Finally, there are just some places that don't take appropriate care when it comes to the health of their employees. I'm not saying that your boss is one of those guys, but think about your long-term career plans. Is it really worth it to work for a guy who won't do the right thing for a customer and who may not be following health and safety rules for employees?

Get your health looked at. See a doctor and charge it to workers comp. Your boss should take care of the fix for the customer - that is part of the price of doing business.

My two cents. Good luck,

~ Kimberly

ya gmc kims right health comes first no job is worth dying for as far as a bad batch it's your word against there's your boss should be dealing with that end of it.stress is another big part of your health issue your worrying to much remember it's just a car if your shop does quality work then your boss should fix it right .when you do a good job the customer might tell half a dozen people but if it's a poor one they tell the whle world. so my suggestion and my paint reps suggestion is to start over it's the only way out of this because whatever it is is still there so talk to your paint company and your boss tell them what has to be done and they can work out the money part and you can do it right the second time ,are you using a fresh air resporator if not demand one I mean it you can not spray this stuff with a carbon filled mask how many old painters do you know none cause it wasn't cool to wear a mask back then

carbon filled mask, ya after i bought one my self. I don't have a paint suit and i have to buy my own latex gloves. the bosss is so cheap i have to reuse paint cups and even the laquer i clean guns with. the boss said it is so hard to make a profit with paint so i have to do these things to keep my job. Why stay you may ask, it's not because of good pay thats for sure, its because i am 23 and i work in a good hotrod shop that has medical benifits, its been a dream of mine since i was 5. In the u.s. ther are only about 300 hotrod shops worth working for but i am only 23 and still have a limited amount of skills. If i could find a rod shop that would take a hard working kid under ther belt like me and also pay benifits like my curent one i would be gone in a minute.

The boss is a great fabricator but has never touched paint or body work. when he started his shop in the 70's hotrods didn't need body work just big motors, but today is a different story. He is 70 maybe he will retire in a bit so i can do things my way.

GMC,
Ditto to what Bent said. The law is the same here in the US as it is in Canada. Your employer is required by law to provide you with the necessary safety equipment. OSHA is not something to mess with - if your boss thinks he's saving money by skimping on safety equipment, he will find he has made a very expensive mistake if OSHA comes sniffing around.

Take care of yourself,

Go see a doctor and Stop painting until you get a fresh air Mask or full suit! Read the labels of the products that you are useing. Paint products are VERY dangerous! If I were you I would find out what the state law is regarding Safety equiptment and then I would go to the boss and say this is the suite I want and if you are not will to provide it I AM OUT OF HEAR! Be prepared to Walk! Then if you walk report him to the local OSHA rep and or the state employment agency. I am guessing that the last painter got sick or feed up or both and left.

Good luck

OSHA rules state that the shop must provide all the right precautions(safe work area space, respirators, well maintained tools, and many many other safety related things).
check this out http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/pel/index.html
probably more than you ever wanted to know, but look around, alot of important info there

You say there are 300 rod shops in the US. How did you get that number?? Do you mean 300 big time big name shops(like foose and coddington?)?
I know for fact that there are much more shops than that in the US. I know of a minimum of 30+ shops in FL(do you want me to start naming them???lol- I can) and I've hardly been in every corner of this state, nor have I really looked for rod shops in FL. Last time I was up near kisimmie, I was waiting for a bus at a greyhound depot, and started to walk around the town. Lo and behold, what did I find only a block away from the bus stop?
A hot rod shop. Unfortunatly it was closed for the week(sign on door said becasue of family problems ;( ) There was a awesome 30's ford and a few other frames sitting in a corner, one of them was a TF Stovebolt, with big M/T on the back!!
This is a tiny shop, had spae for mabye 4 or 6 cars, and probably not many people have heard of(I think it was called wolfmans' of wolfies or something with wolf in it)

What I'm getting at, is that there are other options, other shops to work in, and alot more potential for you.
With the popularity of cars lately, I'm sure you can find 'rod' work in almost any and every tiny town. There are shops that do paint, interiors, motors, body work, etc. And there are also shops that will do whatever you want them to.

It sounds like you're boss is taking advantage of you, and he couldn't care about your health or happiness. Ususally it is old stodgers who try to take advantage of the young pups out there, figuring that the young guys are too dumb, or meek to stand up for themselves.

Anyways, I know this started abouty paint problems , not boss problems. lol

It just bugs me to see another young guy taken advantage of, just because he's trying to do what eh/she loves(even doing dumb things to do so!)

And what is it with almost no one on this board using punctuation? It makes it a good bit harder to understand you when ya don't know where the words start and stop. Makes it confusing......

The paint is lifting off the body in one spot on the cowel but i think the rest of the body is going to be fine. I have a few fisheyes is ther a good way to fix those with out repainting.

I decided to get my health cheched out. The doctorsaid i needed to get a cat scan. Knowing i had insurance i decided it would be a good idea. WE just got new insurance so i did not know how much it paid. So i got the catscan and afterwards i find out i have a $3000 copay. and only 40% after that. So i think i am looking for a new job.
