I assume its the main gear. Am I better off rebuilding this starter ( price wise ) or buying a new one?

Check online , Napa part # RAY2449657 , 6V with solenoid (not foot stomp) is approx. $100. The foot stomp starter, # RAY2449651 is approx $80. You'll have to call for availability. Good luck!

If so, it may not be the starter but the starter switch. This starter switch sits on top of the starter and is held on by two 3/16 screws. Remove the switch and turn it over to see if the copper parts of the switch are corroded. If so, clean them up. Another item to check is the solid copper plug that sits atop the starter underneath the switch. make sure that is clean and not badly worn. Just my 2 cents.....

They have a gentleman who has years of experience rebuilding all of their 6v starters and generators. I sent my HM 6v starter to them and they did a great job. SOUTHEAST CHEVY PARTS 2166 S.
